What is the key to learning how to cross-hatch? I totally stink at it.
It is not compulsory you cross hatch every drawing. Use appropriate shading technique for each object in your drawing.
1 Blurring/smooth technique for (wool clothings, bottles, plastics, etc)
2 Mass/opaque technique for (ink bottles, very dark objects, stains on drawn objects, etc)
3 Hatching/line technique for hard textured objects like (wood, floors, metals, etc)
4 Cross hatching technique for (woven textured materials, nets, some woods, tree trunks - sometimes, etc)
5 Pointilism/dots technique for objects made of grains or particles like (bread, sand, bricks, food grains, etc)
Sometimes you may go out of all these protocols and principles and have your way provided it sends the right message you desire.
