Tradition and Innovation are vital to culture. What are some examples of each? And why?
Tradition: maintaining language and food customs of a culture alive. Examples: Judaism with Hebrew and kosher; Native American with the diverse indigenous languages and foods. Innovation: adapting to new enviornments in ways that will not permanently extinguish a people even when removed from their homeland and ways of life are required to change. Examples: Santa Fe Indian School was once used as a way to extinguish native language and customs by assimilating children into white culture after kidnapping them from their homes...and now used as an institution to preserve native language and customs within the necessities of persevering on reservations within a modernized society that will never fully embrace the indigenous ways of life. There is a reason why the Dalai Lama looked to religious leaders of the Jewish faith, elders of Native American tribes and Aborigines when faced with exile from Tibet. He needed to construct a harmony between tradition and innovation as a means to preserve his people and their culture.
