Comparison of winter (snow) tires

Updated on October 31, 2011

Need winter tires? Ok, let's look

When winter comes to its power you always have to prepared even before. One of the preparations that is related to your car is choosing the best tires for your car.

If in the place where you live, winter is the time, when snow is the only thing you see all around you, then you must choose winter tires very carefully. And this is were i'm going to help you. My goal here today is to give you some alternatives when choosing different tires, and to make the decision easier to you.

Bridgestone Blizzak WS70

This is a new tire from Bridgestone. As Bridgestone says it should make your ride on snow and slush incredibly safe. The tire has four mine grooves that ensures, that water won't hold to long on the tread. According to some tests this tire is one of the most noiseless in it's class. Tests also shows that Bridgestone Blizzak WS70 is very reliable on icy road and has one of the shortest stopping distances on a dry road.

On the other hand if road is wet, this tire has some concurrents that may be more attractive at this particular test. The response on a dry road driving on a highway is also not the best in its class and even gives a big minus to Bridgestone Blizzak WS70.

Continental Extreme Winter Contact

At the very beginning i must say that this tire is probably the best of all others mentioned in this article. The overall rating of Continental Extreme Winter Contact shows the best results in many tests. Mainly it's so because this tire makes handling so easy that you can stop being afraid of winter. It is very predictable when handling on ice, it's ice steering response is fastest of all in the class. Its braking distance on ice or wet road is astonishing.

What you may not like about this tire is that it may stop latter then you want on a dry road. Basically this is the only bad thing about Continental Extreme Winter Contact.

Dunlop Graspic DS-3

What's interesting about Dunlop Graspic DS-3 is that this tire from my own opinion had to be the leader if you look at advertisements we get but in fact, Dunlop made it not as good as always. This time i will start from the bad ones. Dunlop Graspic DS-3 is a very noisy tire and it's handling is just around the average. It takes corners slightly below it's concurrents. It makes a very poor performance on icy road and is no better on wet.

What makes this tire worth buying is that it performs well on dry road. So it's good for cases when driving highway at the very beginning or the end of winter. As i have driven a car wearing these tires, i must admit, that it's not much better then mine Kelly and i believe Kelly makes better performance on icy road. So what i want to say here is that, Dunlop Graspic DS-3 might be some of those cases where it just sounds great but performs middling only.

Michelin X-Ice Xi2

Michelin X-Ice Xi2 is a great tire you can give to your car. As Michelin and Bridgestone always compete in Formula 1 racing, so some kind a competition could be made here. But it won't because Michelin X-Ice Xi2 stands a head over Bridgestone and this is because Michelin gives you absolute riding comfort. It handle's very well and makes less noise compared to other tires mentioned before. Its braking distance is also very respectable.

Only because i should say some disadvantages i will mention that ice grip could be better, but in fact it is enough for a studless tire.

Goodyear Eagle Ultra Grip GW3

The Goodyear Eagle Ultra Grip GW3 is a tire from a well known European tire maker Goodyear and at this point i must say that it's a good product. Goodyear Eagle Ultra Grip GW3 makes a very good performance on a wet road and won't slide a lot on icy road or snow. It also gives you a comfortable ride and just some noise.

But when you think that Goodyear Eagle Ultra Grip GW3 is a performance tire made mostly for sports cars to have a well acceleration on snow and wet roads you shouldn't like its performance on a dry road. There are many tires that will make your ride better on a dry road.

Didn't find what you want?

I want to believe that this review give you what you needed. If not, and you're searching for a cheaper tires try my other hubs about tires.
