Kawasaki ZX-14 Nitrous Installation and Filling Your Own Nitrous Bottles
Bike application: Nitrous is injected into the engine's intake manifold, which produces the following results:
- Lowers the engine intake air temperature, producing a dense inlet charge.
- Increases the oxygen content of the inlet charge (air is only 22 percent oxygen by weight).
- Increase the rate at which combustion occurs in the engine's cylinders.
- Fools electronics into adding additional fuel to make more power.
Nitrous Installation For ZX-14
On my quest to continue customizing my ZX-14. After dropping and stretching my ZX-14, I decided on Nitrous. The problem was finding a NOS package that would fit the bike with the stock swingarm. There's not a lot of room to install a bottle. Muzzy's have a package, but it didn't impress me to well. I wanted something that was balanced and a little trick, to include an easy install. I've never installed NOS on anything and actually stayed away from any ideas of installing it NOS.
Well, I found a product by DynoTune (www.dynotunenitrous.com) specifically for the Kawasaki ZX-14. No modifications to the stock bike needed. Mounts to the rear passenger peg brackets. I've seen them on ebay (black bottles), and watched and read about them for awhile. I just wasn't ready yet to invest the money, and was a little intimadated by installing them. Working on the ZX-14 and all it's fairings and stuff always bothers me, especially if I have not done something like this before. My first concern is having to remove too much stock parts, and scratching something, or just messing something up.
Well, I ordered the polished dual bottle set-up. When they came in, I was very pleased. I think I read through the installation guide many times. I didn't want to rush into this project. I wanted to be fully prepared.
Today, 02/06/2010 I started the install. I didn't complete the installation today for a couple of reasons, the main one, was not to rush.
I got the bottles mounted to the bike, I got the solenoids (2) placed and installed. I got the purge line ran, and the nitrous lines ran to the bottles from the solenoid. I removed the front black dash panels, and the tank cover, to include removing the bolts that hold down the tank.
I started the install by first mounting the brackets to the rear passenger peg mounts.
Next, mounting the bottles to the brackets that came with the kit.
Next was probably the most time consuming, it was trying to find a location under the seat for both solenoids. I have 2 solenoids because of the optional purge kit. The purge solenoid is connecting to the main solenoid. It's mounted in front of the main solenoid.
You will need to install the lines to the solenoids while you find the location (do not tighten), so that you can run the lines to the bottles and purge unit to make sure everything will tuck out of the way. Once you find that location (I removed the toolbox, but used the toolbox mounting bracket to mount the bracket for the solenoid mount.) go ahead and install the braided lines to the solenoids and tighten them down (not too tight, follow the instructions that came with the kit. I used ARP teflon paste)
For the purge unit, I had move out of the way that electronic harness so that I could drill 2 small holes for mounting the small purge until under the tail. I also had to drill a larger hole (you can see in front of the bracket where the purge line is running) to run the purge braided line to the unit from the solenoid.
I used a little ARP Teflon paste on all the hose connections to the bottles and purge unit. Snugged everything down. This is about all I got to today. It wasn't really too bad.
Today I started on the nitrous lines to the main nozzles. Had to lift the tank to get to the intake tracks where the temp sensor is. remove the 2 front tank bolts and loosen the rear two bolts. Lift the front of the tank like it's on a hinge. You do not have to completely remove the tank. I used a bungy cord to hold the tank up and a small 2x2 to prop the tank. Remove the 2 aluminum pieces where the sensor is, and drill a hole for each nozzle. (see pic).
I got all the main nitrous lines ran, from the solenoid to the nozzles.
I next started on the wiring for the purge switch. I had already removed the dash panels. I drilled a hole in the right dash panel and installed the push button switch for the purge. Ran 2 lines from the switch. One line goes directly to the solenoiod and 2nd line goes to a 12v supply. For the 12v supply I used the line that was cut from the license plate light. On the solenoid, it has 2 lines. 1 line goes to ground and the other to the switch. I used the heat shrink sleeves on all the connections to make it a clean and professional looking install. This took a couple of hours to complete.
My next step is to connect the main switch to the nitrous. I will probably start this task sometime this week.
Well, I finally got back on the project. All I had to do today was wire up the main NOS switch to the horn, fill the bottles and test for leaks.
Basically I have a toggle switch with 6 connectors on the back. It utilizes the current horn button to spray the NOS. You turn the toggle switch to the ON position, and the horn button becomes active to turn on the solenoid that pumps the NOS to the air intake. When the toggle switch is OFF, the horn works as normal. I got it all wired up, and tested the horn to make sure it still works. Couldn't test the NOS. That will ne for another day.
I purchased my own Nitrous Plus from Airgas, so that I can fill my own bottles. I filled the little bottles that came with the kit, to test for leaks and the purge. I wasn't able to fill a lot in the bottles because I didn't freeze them, so the temp in the main bottle and the bike bottles were about the same, so the pressure would not allow me to get that much NOS transferred. I did get enough to test the purge and leaks.
Everything looked good. I did have a little leak on one of lines from the bottle to the solenoid. The instructions said to use teflon paste not tape. Well the paste doesn't work as well as the tape. After talking with DynoTune, they recommended the tape, just don't be sloppy with it.
So, I took the 2 lines from the bottles off at the solenoid, and used some teflon tape. Everything looks good now, no leaks.
I thought a pressure gauge on both bottles would be functional and a little trick. Turned out nice.
Overall not a bad project. Just take your time and follow the instructions. Maybe break up the project into sections. What I did was the following sections:
1. mount bottles
2. run braided lines and find location for solenoids.
3. install purge line, and wire switch.
4. run nitrous lines to air intake
5. install electrical components and main NOS switch.
Filling Your Own Nitrous Bottles
This project started to turn into more than I bargained for. After the installation of the actual NOS kit in my Kawasaki ZX-14, I had to get my bottles filled. I called and shopped around and could not really find some place to fill my bottles conviently.
My first stop was the local Airgas store to see if they could fill my bottles. Nope, they couldn't, but they could sell me the Nitrous in a 50lb bottle and I would have to fill them myself. So, my next step was to figure out how to fill my own bottles.
My best solution that was cost effective, was to first set up an account with Airgas, and purchase the NOS, which was about 80.00 just for the gas. Than I ordered from DynoTuneNitrous.com 4AN Stainless Nitrous Bottle Nut with washer and 4AN Nitrous line 2 foot with a Blue Fitting.
With all these items purchased, the process is: Place the small bottles from the bike in the freezer for apx 4-6 hours or more. Freezing the bottles, drops the pressure inside so that when I connect the main bottle to the small bottles and open the valve, the NOS will flow into the small bottles. From what I've read online, the bottles you are filling will not fill completely.
There is another alternative to the freezing, but it will cost you apx 850.00 for a refil station, which comes with a pump that pumps the NOS from the mother bottle to the smaller bottles..
