How Much Does A Go Go Dancer Earn

Updated on July 2, 2011

How Much Does A Go Go Dancer Earn

In November 2010 the Oasis GoGo Bar on Soi Bukhao in Pattaya, Thailand were advertising for Go Go Dancers. There was a big sign outside giving the wages and the perks of the job. This was probably the best indication of the current state of pay for GoGo dancers.

A little off the beaten track of Walking Street and its side Soi's (roads) it is none the less a popular haunt for some. One can assume that wages may be slightly higher elsewhere and perhaps a little less when well away from the main drag.

Before examining the offer by the Oasis and the benefits included with the post one does have to look at it in the context of the average wage in Thailand. There is tremendous disparity between the rich and the poor and figures one sees quoted in newspaper articles do not, I feel reflect the truth.

Probably the average daily take of your average Thai is in the region of 300-400 Thai Baht per day. Some may only get half this of course. If working cutting or planting rice up in Isaan province you are unlikely to take home more than 150-200 Thai Baht per day. People on average live on less than the average salary.

The average national minimum wages fluctuates by a few Baht up and down the country but it is less than 250 Baht everywhere as of December 2010. Read 'Minimum Wage In Thailand' to learn more.

Some get considerably more of course and a driver in Bangkok could be expected to earn between 7,500 - 11,000 Thai Baht per month. Lecturers in colleges and universities will earn 30,000 Thai Baht per month and upwards.

The Oasis Offer

So there you have it, the Oasis Offer! 600 Thai Baht per day before you have the extras added. Remember that most of these GoGo dancers come from the rice paddies of Isaan in Northern Thailand. There they have been lucky to earn 200 Baht per day labouring from dawn to dusk and beyond. Even then most of what they earned, if they were given anything at all, would be handed over to their parents.

Here they dance regular hours in an air conditioned environment and get more than three times the amount.

Then there are the perks.

Here she will get 40 Baht commission on every ladies drink. If she dances well she could get as many as ten drinks a night. That would push her daily take up to 1000 Baht.

Then there is her Bar Fine commission. 150 Baht here. Very good reason to smile and be friendly to customers. Although some girls may take a night off when bar fined others will prefer 'short time' so they can perhaps get back to the Go Go Bar and be Bar Fined for a second or even a third time.

Although negotiations with customers are a private affair there is nothing to stop some girls earning upwards of 3000 Baht per night, and I know some that do. A bit of a better deal than a Beer Bar.

This means that some Go Go dancers can earn three times that of a college lecturer in a month. It's a good job if you can hack it.

Peter, kudos on your very informative "Hub". I did visit that soapy a few days later and picked the same lady. She seems thrilled that I picked her again; so I'm guessing the 100 baht tip was OK. They must all get base pay. I'm sure some of them sit in the fishbowl all day and don't get picked.

No way......just follow your feelings and try and understand these girls and why they do what they do. As for the beer bar crowd......you don't surprise me. Read some of my 'Pattaya Hubs' and other hubs on Thailand....useful honest advice.

Whoa, now I'm totally confused. When I asked around Pattaya (beer bar crowd) what an appropriate tip was for a soapy girl, the number ranged from zero to 50 baht. So you're saying I should have tipped 2,000 baht for a 2,000 baht massage ?

It really depends on the girl....more is better if you can afford. At Good Day Massage on Soi Bukhao they do excellent foot massage, Thai massage and so on. Generally customers tip the cost of the massage. So if it was 100 Baht they tip 100 Baht as well.

So in this case she may get 800 baht plus the extra 100 baht. Do you think the extra 100 baht was appropriate ? Asked around that week and never got a definitive answer. Price structure that day at the soapy was 2,000/2,500/4,000.

It would never be a 50% split. She may get 40%. Prices in Soapy Massages depend on the girl and her popularity. Who knows who owns the new Honey Inn. Good to use the name as many know the Soi as Soi Honey Inn rather than just Soi Honey. The Honey Massage is, I am told, Korean owned or backed. Don't really know. I only know two girls who work there and I have never asked.

So the lady couldn't be just getting the 100 baht. I would think she splits the 2,000 baht with the house. There is now the Honey Inn across the soi from Honey Massage. Same owners ?

The 100 baht was hers....not sure what the arrangement is with her employers. Different places different deals. Honey Body Massage used to be the Honey Hotel a few years back. Always full.....but turned into a massage place two years ago. Obviously more money in that.

Peter, just returned from a week in Pattaya (my first); it was not long enough. "Soapys" should be experienced at least once in every man's life. Curious to know the business model. Visited the "Honey Body Massage" (first rate place); paid 2,000 baht all in; gave the girl an extra 100 baht. OK, what's the split ? Who gets what ?

I know some girls that have made fortunes, I have written quite a bit about it in many of my hubs. I think that most attractive girls make far more than 600THB per day.

You may well be right Edwin. Depends on the individual I suppose. I know Bar Girls who earn double that every day though.

600 baht sure is a lot of money for a days work. But thinking about the emotional and physical consequences they will be put through, 600 isn't nearly enough.
