Kirsten Student Development, Inc. (KSDI)

Updated on November 20, 2008

The UK has great opportunities for professionals from the medical industry. It has a high demand of medical workers and has started admitting medical professionals from other countries. Some foreigners even study medical courses from there and work there at the same time after graduation. This opportunity has caught the attention of many Filipinos and it has given them hope to earn a high paying job and strive harder amd hasten their skills in medicine and caregiving. Some schools and agencies in the UK has partnered with Philippine agencies in order to help spread the word and help those professionals who would want to study, enahce their skills and land a job in the medical profession in the country.

One of these agencies is Kirsten Student Development, Inc. (KSDI). KSDI is a student agency helping individuals who are interested to study in the UK. Kirsten cleared it though that they are not a recruitment agency. The agency only assists all those individuals who are interested to study in the United Kingdom. They assist candidates in the acquisition of their student visa to the United Kingdom. The study schedule of the students gives them enough time to work part time and earn enough to support their education.

In the said program, the students study in the UK for 2 years through the National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) program. While studying, a student can work and earn at the same time. A student can earn up to 900 pounds a month, which can help him pay for his tuition, living and personal expenses. The applicant has to be graduates of nursing, caregiving, practical nursing, nursing aide and other medical courses. Those who have caregiving work experience are also qualified to apply.

London at Night
London at Night

The NVQ Program is the fastest way to process one's visa to the UK. Once the required documents are completed and the corresponding fees are paid, an applicant can be flying to the UK in as fast as 3 months. An applicant who completed the 2 year course becomes a qualified senior carer, supervisor or manager in a care institute.

Kirsten requires that the applicant currently lives and is a bonafide resident of the Philippines. The program has no age limit and all those ineterested with relevant medical degree or training can apply.

With fits, starts, and the" rude mechanicals". There will still be the Wicked Faire and from what I have heard, it's definitely worth it! Round midsummer out the bouquet with soft, silvery lamb's ear. The Solstice is the longest day and shortest night of the week except Sunday and Monday. The play's setting has been moved from Athens to escape her father and the law. And this is a lab experiment created by Dmitry Krymov, a set designer turned director. Both male and female, poor and rich, to celebrate the fertility of humans, animals, and crops alike.

@allwhite: as for your case hindi ko alam kung mag kaano yong makukuha mo. As for me wla pa akong visa nag withdraw ako. Kasi i wrote to wave and they said na wla pa silang natanggap from kirsten ni isang dolyar. So that means wla pang nababayad yong kirsten at pag punta ka sa UK bayad ka ulit.

nirereklamo na sila ng mga pinoy student based in UK. eto po ung article, quote ko lang mula sa Hello-Phillipines, UK based Philippine Newspaper... BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND - More Filipino students are coming out to complain against Kirsten Student Development Inc., a Philippine-based consultancy agency that gave advice to applicants on how to secure a student visa in the UK.

These students contacted ABS-CBN Europe News Bureau to vent their anger against Kirsten, which promised to talk to the UK colleges and assist the students with their ad hoc requirements in getting the student visa. The students shelled out up to $7,000 to Kirsten for this service.

But what attracted the students to Kirsten was the opportunity for them to work in the UK while studying.

Na bawal akong mag file nang case to POEA and other govt. agency. But it wont stop me posting some comments here kasi hindi bero ginawa nila sa akin. I lost almost 200,000 for the processing and other fees dahil sa kanilang ginagawa.Sabi nila 3-4 months processing? It took almost 1 year for them to get a result plus new rules daw, new payments ulit. Good luck sa lahat sana ma close na itong KSDI

UK-based students vent anger at PH agency

by Rose Eclarinal, ABS-CBN Europe News Bureau

      Posted at 10/27/2011 10:26 AM | Updated as of 10/27/2011 4:52 PM

WOW, LIAR MADAM AT HER FINEST..... SIGE PA, MAGSINUNGALING KA PA

Students at Birmingham speak to ABS-CBN Europe News Bureau's Rose Eclarinal

They were promised to be given on-the-job-training with pay, but these jobs came later than anticipated. Many were left with no job or money to finance their education in the UK.

This is the root cause of rage among the students in Birmingham.

“Napakalaking gamble noon sa amin na ang laki-laki ng binayad namin tapos wala naman (trabaho). Akala namin pagdating dito okay. Yun pala, yung mga sinabi niyang trabaho, di naman totoo,” said John, the designated spokesperson of the students.

He was earlier interviewed by ABS-CBN Europe News Bureau on the same issue.

Aurora Amelig came to the UK in 2008 as a student, also getting the visa through Kirsten. After only 3 months, Amelig and her fellow students found out the college where they were enrolled in suddenly went into liquidation and was forced to close down.

Around a hundred Filipino students were affected by the sudden closure of Affinity College. Amelig said, as a consultancy agency trusted to choose a reputable college for them, Kristen failed to do its job.

They were not able to refund their tuition fees and were left to look for another another college. When some students were unsuccessful, they were deported.

What also irked them was the indifference of the consultancy agency that sold to them the idea of earning enough to fund their own education. The students also did not get any assistance from Kirsten, when they faced challenges of living in the UK.

“Wala man lang letter from Kirsten saying na ito ang gagawin at mag-enrol kayo sa isang school which is an affiliate. We did not receive any assistance from them, to think na 3 buwan pa lang naman kami sa England,” said Amelig.

Tapos maghihirap sila dito.”

      Kirsten denies allegations

In a phone interview with ABS-CBN News Manila, Kirsten denied all the allegations.

Maridee Basco, president of Kirsten, said they neither duped the students nor promised them work.

“Hiindi po kami nanloloko. We are very transparent here. Lagi nila akong kaharap, lagi nila akong nakakausap. May meeting every time na may issue sa UK. Nung naipit file nila sa embassy for 10 months, bakit di sila nagreklamo na linuloko sila? Bakit nung may 3-year visa, saka sila magco-complain? If you are not satisfied, don't go to UK. Dito pa lang, stop na,” Basco said.

She reiterated that Kirsten did not promise work.

“Di po ako nangangako ng trabaho. Hindi ito work-permit. Itong sinasabing trabaho ay pinaka-OJT with pay sa mga carehomes. Nagkataon na may bayad ito based on their rate,” she said.

Basco also explained that Kirsten charged different fees for students, but did not say if the tuition was included in the payment.

“Nag-increase po, nagbayad na sila $3,000, merong $4,000. After last year, na-inform magdadala ng additional because the course is different,” said Basco.

The students insisted that Kirsten made them believe that the $7,000 fees cover part of their tuition in the UK college.

Regarding assistance to students in the UK, Kristen was adamant that it is the responsibility of the trainer and the UK college.

Some students believe Kirsten and the UK college colluded to cover up the lapses of each other.

“Malaki ang posibilidad na may sabwatan sila kasi ang eskuwelan nagkukunwari na wala silang alam sa binayaran. Kasi yung mga binayaran namin na supposed to be for tuition fee, wala naman daw nakarating sa eskuwelahan,” said John.

      UK College defends itself

Kirsten facilitated the UK visas of the Filipino students for a 3-year Level 3 National Certificate Care and Management course under Quality Care Solutions Ltd or Wave Training Ltd.

When contacted by ABS-CBN Europe News Bureau, Wave Training categorically denied that there is any collusion with Kirsten in providing "false hopes" or advertisement as the students alleged.

Gail Porter, Interim General Manager of Wave Training Limited explained in a letter that "there is not, and never has been any collusion between Wave and Kirsten in an attempt to cover up the 'wrong information'.”

Porter also explained that the students signed an agreement that outlines the responsibilities and obligations of each party.

“All learners were issued with details of the course and requirements in their visa letters and have signed a Learners' Agreement. This agreement in brief sets out the level of tuition fees payable to Wave and the expected behaviors of each student. Copies of the agreements were supplied to Kirsten and some students signed the Learners Agreement before leaving the Philippines,” said Porter.

Porter also added: ‘We are not privy to the exact detail of Kirsten’s communication with each individual student. When examples of false information have been brought to our attention we have immediately responded to agents to address this."

The company likewise clarified that it did not shirk from its responsibilities to the students in making them aware of the fees they needed to pay, particularly tuition fees.

‘We at Wave did our utmost to ensure that all students were aware, even before they left the Philippines, that there would be tuition fees to pay to the college and indeed what the payments would be. These overseas tuition fees charged by Wave are between £2000 - £6000 per year, less than fees charged by other colleges/universities,” said Porter.

Because of the complaints against Kirsten received by Wave, the college is not dealing with Kirsten in the future.

“Notice was previously served to Kirsten of our intention to discontinue working with them following the enrolment of the final batch of students by email and by letter earlier in 2011,” stated Porter.

      Angry students

The students are still angry because they believe they have been duped.

John, on behalf of fellow students at Birmingham, has a message for Kirsten: “Tigilan na niya ang panloloko niya. Kasi sa puntong ito bisto na siya. Siya na ang sinungaling, siya pa yung mayabang”.

Amelig is appealing to Filipino students to delay their plans to study and work in the UK, and wait for the UK economy to improve.

“It’s too expensive here at naka-student visa ka lang. First thing, you don’t have work. Kahit mga British citizen hirap kumuha ng 35 hours of work sa sarili nilang bansa, so how much more ang foreigners,” she said.

Pinoy students in UK warn vs PH consultancy firms

      Sep 22, 2011 at 12:55 PM

BIRMINGHAM, England - A surge in the number of students arriving in Birmingham has alarmed Filipino community groups in the city.

Students started to arrive in June, some in groups of 10 to 15 students. All of them came to the UK to seek the proverbial green pasture.

They came with student visas but most, if not all, came here with the intention to work as allowed by the UK law, and also to study. After all, they have been working as registered nurses in the Philippines for many years.

They were lured to work and study in the UK. Now, they feel trapped by the agreements they have signed, and are starting to realize that the consultancy agency that processed their visas took advantage of their naiveté and desperation to find work abroad.

“Ang ganda ng pangako. Sabi po 3 days may trabaho na. Yun po ang pinangako sa amin na taliwas sa experience namin ngayon. We are expecting a lot na hanggang ngayon wala pa rin po (kaming trabaho),” said John, not his real name.

John approached ABS-CBN Europe News Bureau, along with the other students, to warn Filipinos to be wary of these so-called consultancy agencies in Manila. He declined to be identified for fear of being harassed by the consultancy agency.

      Consultancy agency in question

Kirsten Student Development Incorporated facilitated the student visas of the Filipino students for a 3-year Level 3 National Certificate Care and Management course in the UK under Quality Care Solutions Ltd or Wave Training Ltd.

The students paid a total of $7,000, excluding the airfare to the UK and other miscellaneous fees. To be granted a student visa in the UK, they also had to secure at least P700,000 or £9,150 in the bank as show money. Before they could leave the Philippines, some of them were already buried in debt, spending up to a million pesos.

The longer they stayed with Kirsten to process their documents, the more they spent. In retrospect, it was a strategy by the consultancy company to milk money from the desperate students. From 3 to 4 months of processing documents, some of them waited up to 2 years before they boarded the plane bound for the UK.

“Kasi once na nakapag-apply ka na, mahirap ng mag withdraw ng pera na binigay mo. Katulad nung nag- apply ako, sinabi nila na 3-4 months makakaalis kami. In that period bayad na kami dapat. Kung mag-withdraw ka, 70 percent lang ang makukuha mo. So parang sa aming mga aplikante, dahil nag- invest ka na ng time, ayaw mo ng mag back-out kasi manghihinayang sa 30 percent,’ said ‘John.’

It was also their understanding that the $7,000 they paid Kirsten included a portion of payment for their tuition fee in the UK college. But when they reported to Wave Training Ltd., they were shocked to find out that nothing has been paid by Kirsten.

In the contract secured by ABS-CBN Europe between one of the students and Kirsten, it stipulates "the UK enrollment and administration fees of $4,000 have to be paid." This amount is part of the total amount of $7,000.

Tuition fee is not stipulated in any part of the contract. But according to John, it was only verbally explained to them that tuition fee is under "the enrolment and admin fees" portion.

He also provided another copy of the contract agreement where the amount was reduced to $ 3,000, but that was only on paper since they had still paid the agreed amount of $7,000. He said the revised contract was given to him prior to his departure from Manila.

      Promises divorced from reality

Although it was explained to them that they need at least £600 per month to survive the student life in the UK, nothing prepared the students for the conditions that awaited them in Birmingham. Unable to work for months and with classes to attend, the pocket money they thought would be enough for them to get, disappeared quickly.

With intense pressure from living in a new environment and decrepit accommodations, one of the students had a mental breakdown and was sent back to the Philippines.

“Dun sa previous batch, may nagkaroon ng nervous breakdown. Kasi di talaga kakayananin dun sa pinadala nila sa amin na pocket money na amounting to £1,000. It’s not enough to sustain us for almost 2 months na wala kaming trabaho,” said Cathy, not her real name. ABS-CBN Europe is also withholding the real name of Cathy to protect her from any form of harassment.

“Marami silang di tinupad. Una di nila na mention na pagdating sa amin dito may agency na may magha-handle dito. Kumbaga wala na kaming ini-expect na third party,” added Cathy.

The third party is another company that secures work for the students. Cathy said this company placed their classmates in other cities where travelling to and from their classes would be physically inconceivable.

ABS-CBN Europe, through its news arm in the Philippines, tried to get Kirsten to comment on the issues raised but the students but to no avail.

Filcom Groups in Birmingham lend a hand

The students are worried they will not be able to pay their tuition fees if they do not start to work immediately. For 36 months, they need to pay £300 a month to Wave Training Ltd. On top of the tuition fee, they also have to worry about living expenses, which average £600 a month.

With the help of the Filipino priest in Corpus Christy Catholic Church, Fr. Edgar Dizon, the students are getting guidance emotionally. Dizon asked the Filipino community in his Parish to help the students. The Filcom groups in Birmingham are mostly composed of nurses working for the NHS and other private hospitals.

“Tayong mga Pilipino, mataas tayong mangarap. Gusto nating maayos ang bukas ng pamilya natin sa Pilipinas kaya gumagawa tayo ng paraan para pumunta sa ibang bansa at magtrabaho. Ang mga taong nagpo-proseso ng mga papers, sinasasamantala nila ang mga kabataang ito, sinisingil nila ng napakalaki, kung ano anong pangako na wala namang katotohanan pagdating nila sa UK,” explained Dizon.

He also called on the government to look into this problem.

“Sana yung mga mambabatas sa Pilipinas tingnan ang bagay na ito, ang gorbyerno para ma resolve kung ano ang problema. Kung kailangang itigil na ang ganitong kalakaran sa Pilipinas, itigil na. Aksyon ang kailangan natin kaysa patuloy na nalololoko ang mga kababayan natin,” said Dizon.

      The crux of the problem

Consultancy agencies in the Philippines prey on people who are anxious to leave Philippines for better job prospects abroad. Back home, the applicants are unaware of the real situation in the UK. So when consultancy firms present these job opportunities in the UK, they are taken as gospel truth.

Consultancy firms make money from the business of processing student documents but it has recently reached a point of greed where they charge enormous fees, as in the case of Kirsten.

There is no regulatory body in the Philippines to oversee these consultancy agencies. There is also no law that protects the students when confronted with this kind of problem.

“Hinihiling ko po na sana magkaroon ng batas at mapag-aralan kung ano ang patakaran at grounds para pwedeng mabigyan ng lunas ang ‘sinidkato’ na ito na gumagawa ng bagay ng magpapaalis pero napakaraming panloloko,” said John.

For the students, the UK college as well as the consultancy firms in the Philippines, are both guilty of duping them. --Rose Eclarinal, ABS-CBN Europe News Bureau

      Thank you for your email.

I understand you applied for your visa having agreed to be supported through this process by Kirsten Student Development Inc. Wave had agreed with Kirsten at the time of your application to offer you a place on our programme which you would pay for in monthly instalments when you arrived in the UK.

Wave Training therefore does not have any tuition fees from students until they arrive in the UK. Any payments you have made to Kirsten in advance of coming to the UK is a matter between you and Kirsten.

I hope this clarifies the situation with regard to the payment of tuition fees.

      Kind Regards

      K Manalo 6 years ago

      Good day,

Please allow me to introduce myself, I am Karlo Manalo, the marketing head for AIMA Group Ltd., a multinational company based in Makati city that acts the registrar’s/admissions office of a London based school. I write to you now to ask for more information about your organization.

I came across your site while I was searching for websites and groups for Filipino nurses to try and establish ties and partnerships. As a company that invites Filipino nurses to the United Kingdom under our Overseas Nursing Program (ONP), we wish to provide concise and accurate information on the where, what and how of UK nursing opportunities. Our aim, our advocacy is to help fellow Filipino’s reach their dream of working and living in the UK through transparent and direct communication. We do this by eliminating the agency or consultancy entity. As the company that owns the school, we have made the process of inquiry, application and departure of students fast and low cost.

      Overseas Nursing Program

The Overseas Nursing Program provides an opportunity for Filipino nurses with an opportunity to become registered nurses in the United Kingdom.

The primary requirement to be eligible for the ONP programs is you must be a registered nurse with at least 1 year experience in a 100 bed capacity hospital, then you will need to take IELTS as part of the requirement to apply for a student visa with an average score of 7 across all bands.

Should you pursue, you need to register with us under the PDA Level 6 course coupled with ONP. The total course fee is GBP 2,950.00, which is an introductory price for Filipino students.

Once you have registered with us, we will do the usual process of securing your visa and once you are in the UK, the college will undertake the process leading to your starting the ONP training (which runs for 3-6 months).

Based on the latest immigration data, there are more or less 3,000 Filipino nurses are currently in the UK and the number continues to grow, and yet the process they utilize is oftentimes costly and complicated.

Information on UK nursing opportunities are obscured and lacking, and while there are resources available (mostly government agencies that post new regulations and updates) these are difficult to understand by the people it is most relevant to – the students and their parents. The reason being, they admitted to not understanding what is stated due to confusing terms or basic ignorance on how the process works.

Such information is critical, as there are hundreds of Filipino’s being sent to the United Kingdom yearly, and thousands more planning to do so. Often those who plan to, rely on second hand information or stories that are passed from a source, typically being relatives, friends or classmates, which as is often the case, the reality and details are eroded or worse omitted. This is the reason why the majority have used agencies and consultancies as their way to applying for the UK. While this has often been the usual route to go in applying for study, work or migration, there are alternatives that are better and pose less risk.

It is this lack of information that drives our company to reach out to as many affected sectors and individuals in order to provide truthful information on nursing related topics-, specifically UK based nursing opportunities. As you may be aware, there has been a lot of misinformation and misnomers on this subject resulting in some individuals and companies taking advantage of such.

Our aim is to demystify and clarify that going to the UK under a student visa need not be complicated or expensive, a point made clear by the at the speed at which we have deployed student applicants, depending on the readiness and availability of their requirements, some of our students have taken as little as 2 months from the time they applied to the time they left for London, some even have had their visa’s issued in as little as 3 days.

This is further supported by our fees, which compared to the processing fees of agencies and consulting groups that charge from one hundred to seven hundred thousand pesos, ours is less than one hundred thousand inclusive of the registration, visa and documentation charges.

We understand that this would raise a few questions on the veracity of the information and how that is possible and what it may cost, the answer to which is what I indicated earlier, as the company that owns the school, we have made the process simpler and faster. The visa application is also easier because our school is rated as Tier 4, Highly Trusted by the UKBA - United Kingdom Border Agency, (www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk), making our school recognized by the UK embassy here in Manila.

We would like to inquire, how we could possibly collaborate with your organization, with regards on UK education opportunities, UK student visa guidelines and UK based Filipino student information.

We understand that your organization’s goal is fostering relations and assisting Filipinos in your area, and like you, we share the same goal. We wish to provide Filipinos here in the Philippines and those already in the UK with detailed information about the conditions, changes and updates for UK immigration (in the context of student visa’s) so that the public - your members, members families and relatives will have a better grasp of the requirements and processes involved in applying for opportunities in the UK.

What we envision is a long term collaborative effort between our company and your organization, combining our resources to fill in the information void present today. Through a sustained, detailed and easy to understand delivery of information, the goal of clearing the misconceptions and myths about studying and working in the UK will be attained.

We propose an activity that would get this message across, such relevant information needs to be made available and accessible to those who seek it, the sad reality is, should a student wish to know about educational and work opportunities in the UK, a search on Google would yield a lot of news stories and features on scams by individuals and companies that have taken advantage of students.

We look towards people and websites like these to help us in our goal of promoting honest, direct and quality service to Filipino’s who wish to better their lives by going to the UK.

To give you more information about the company I represent, please visit our websites: www.aimagroup.co.uk, www.ascollege.org for details on our company and school.

This is a brief overview of the service and program our school and company provides, should you require more information or need clarification on any of the information indicated, please feel free to contact me at the numbers below. Again thank you and I look forward to providing information to your website and members.

      Sincerely,

      Karlo Rey Manalo

      hassle!

pa-update na lang po about the KSD. and salamat for this site.
