   Getting a free web site?
   
   Is there good places on the internet to get your own, decent web-site, or is it better to just pay for one?

   It really depends on what kind of website you need and what you are trying to get from it.  You can get free blog websites from wordpress.org or you can buy a cheap hosting plan and host your own website or blog with your own domain name.  I'm sure you can find hubs that explain using wordpress free service in much more detail.
   
   Other options include site builders like Godaddy.com offers a site builder for like $24 a month where it kind of walks you through building a simple website.  Intuit.com also offers this service.
   
   If you want anything more appealing or useful then the most basic of websites it is best to have someone build it for you unless you know how.  I spent a couple of years doing web design professionally, now I just do a little freelance work.  You can contact me if you have questions or want my help or samples.  Or you can do a craigslist search and you will probably find an out of work web designer that will work for pretty cheap!

   Personally, i would start off with a blog!  Mostly wordpress.  You can actually do a lot of design manipulations, and there are literally THOUSANDS of FREE wordpress themes to utilize!  I actually use a free one for my blog, www.foodnservice.com!  It's versatile and fits all of my needs.  You don't have to set it up to be a blog!  You can keep them as static web pages, plus they're easy to use and lots of free tutorials out there to explain things.

   I've used Weebly to set up several websites with great success - www.maziocreate.com.au is my main site. I have upgraded to their Pro service - $79 for two years, because I needed the options to develop certain online tools.  However, their free web building tools are second to none, and if you can use features available in Word then you can develop a web site using Weebly.  Also their support is great!  I've needed to contact them on several occasions about 'walls I've hit' through my lack of knowledge, and they have rectified the situation very quickly.

   If your serious about starting a real site I would get a domain name and some cheap hosting like hostgator.com. You can get web space for as little as 2.99 a month and it will come with an installer to install a blog for you. That way your in total control of your site. These free sites are ok but you don't own them and they can change their terms of service anytime they like.
   
   Second, for less than 40 dollars you could get a pro theme for the blog. This would help you rank better in google too.

   Wordpress can be a blog or website, it's free with lots of information and videos on how to do almost anything you choose. Many large companies are using wordpress for their websites.

   I guess like everyone else who has responded I'd say the same thing - it depends on your needs and your technical aptitude.
   
   If you are a new comer and just starting with online activities like a web or blog then start with the free services like - Blogger, wordpress.  You can also get free hosting which I've used many times and always recommend to friends.

   If you just want to run a personal blog or website as your hobby then go for free one but if you are planning something professional then never go for free, just search for few Cheap Web Hosting option around you.
