SEO stands for search engine optimization and SEO practices are used for better rankings of your pages in SERPS. So, you can't actually join SEO.
If you mean more 'how did you start in SEO' then I actually started dabbling with just a free blog at blogger.com.
I build that, then read some articles talking about search engine optimisation... then I looked through some forums and articles and applied what I learned gradually to the blog, a little here and a little there every now and again.
Eventually it became a very popular blog (because it ranked highly in the search engines and was filled with good content) and has become very profitable.
From my point of view, ranking high in the search engines is all about quality and relevance. Write (or have written) good quality articles, related specifically to the niche you are targetting (e.g. knitting for pets) and you will rank high. Google is all about the user experience so make it a good one.
All the best!
