Being a relatively new term for those "between jobs" and those looking to improve themselves in their current work, this question provides a venue in which to examine the subject across all industries and positions.
Once you can identify the pain an employer is suffering you know what their key problems are. Once you know the issues they face then you can slant your application in such a way that you suggest you can solve those issues and irradicate the pain. Sounds easy? well not very, but it is important to spend a lot of time trying to understnd what is going on for companies that you want to work for.
