What are the best SEO practices for a new website?

And after 3 months - I am noticing there is a good chunk of visitor from round the world (like 100-150 daily). It may not sound 'good' to you but I have no idea how this people are getting in my site when I haven't done any SEO.
So, here's my question - I am complete newbie in SEO but I do want to derive enormous traffic like 1K daily to boost my adsense earning. I am all by myself and don't have money to hire an expensive company. What SEO can I do by myself for my site?
