It's a place where you can buy and sell shares of a corporation. Traditionally, at a stock exchange I can buy a little piece of any corporation for a few bucks and say that I own a part of it. If the company does well and becomes more valuable while I own it, I can sell my little piece for more than I paid and make a profit.
A place where stocks and shares of public companies, and securities issued by governments or local authorities are bought and sold. But for these markets of such things it would , be difficult for private people to get into touch with other people wanting to sell or purchase securities. The only persons who have the right to do actual buying or selling on a stock exchange are the members of it, who are bound by strict rules. Any private person wishing to buy or sell has to employ a broker who is a member and charges a fee, called a commission, for doing the business.
