   What is best tactic for returning a recently purchased vehicle?
   
   If you left a lot of a dealership, driving a used vehicle, and in less than three hours of buying it, the engine begins to rattle, acceleration is questionable, and the vehicle shakes when parking - how would you handle the situation?

   This depends on whether it was an as is contract? If so, Your'e stuck. If not, It is Federal law that you can return a purchased vehicle within 30 days if unsatisfied. Of course, The dealer would never tell you that.

      The vehicle was under contract, however, the dealership has agreed either to repair (if costs aren't too high) or break the contract.

   Did you test drive the vehicle?  Were there any maintainence lights on?  You can still return the vehicle even if it is financed, do it before you have owned the vehicle for 24 hours.  What state do you live in?

      Yes, we test drove it. No, there were not maintenance lights on during the test drive - but they were on after we took it home.  The dealership has the vehicle now. They either will break the contract or repair the vehicle - for which I am glad.

      I am glad you took the vehicle back to the dealer, if it were me in your position, I would go for breaking the contract.  If you make that choice and they agree, make sure you get documentation, you don't want a bad car loan on your credit report.

      Dealer just communicated with us that they will repair, and will hold off processing our downpayment or contract until we drive the van again &are satisfied with repairs. We will take to another mechanic when we have van. Thank you for responses.

      Be careful, don't pay for any portion of repairs.  Red flag to keep this vehicle even with repairs.  Dealers know their inventory, they intentionally sold you a van that needed repairs and hoped they would have some time before the van broke down run
