Research of successful entrepreneurs has documented that successful small business people have certain common characteristics
Small business owners have a number of different characteristics. They should be great leaders, be able to sell their product and also have a good grasp on finances.
I have an article on this at

It goes into the topic more and I wouldn't want to write it all out in a forum post.
A good business plan.
Willing to do the work.
Takes time to relax/re-energize.
I'd say having a plan, to promote a service or product. Then learning to be persistent and consistent...in moving forward to promote, and attain your set goals in that plan:). One more thing...good customer service! That is something, that is almost becoming a lost art today.
Risk factoring ability is important also, as the more you can learn to do this the better chance you can beat competion where it matters, in the factoring of risk versus profit, by understanding that the more you can know the less risk you have to take on high risk business, which is where much of the big margins are.
