My Fifth Month at Hubpages

Updated on November 4, 2011

As you may have noticed, I did not publish a 4th month review - I started my new job and I have had my hub time significantly reduced. I still managed to publish 8 hubs in my 4th month but generated only 1.53$ in revenue. Adsense only gave me five cents so most of that revenue was from hubAds.

Anyhow, in this fifth month I have only written two hubs, Peripheral Man Episode 3 and Inane Episode 29. These are the easiest hubs for me to write because they require very little research. The Inane hubs especially I can whip out in about twenty minutes so I could write lots of those. I'm not convinced that the market for them is all that great, especially considering my most busy inane hub in terms of total lifetime visits has only had 76 visits since it was published in June.

I now take the train to and from work every day, about a 30 minute ride each way. I will try to do a better job in my sixth month of hub pages to take advantage of that time to write. My limiting factor is that I do not have a mobile internet plan that would allow me to do research while commuting, so I'll have to do the research when I can but reserve the actual writing for that time. Do you make use of commuting time to write? Let me know in the comments.

In terms of traffic and revenue, this month I've had 512 pageviews, 293 HubAd Impressions, $1.75 of HubAd revenue, 257 Adsense views and 0 clicks giving me $0.02 for a total of $1.77.

So I won't be able to read as much, the hubs of others, or write as much, but I will try to get back to coming to Hubpages on a regular basis, even if it is only for ten or twenty minutes at a time. If I can do that, hopefully I'll see an increase in my traffic and revenue.

How are you doing in whatever month you are at?

FBR, sorry to hear about you not yet finding work. My job is working out quite well so far, I'm pleased with how it is going. That I am only getting back to reply to you 10 days later is an indication of how much this job is taking of my time...

Phil: I had no idea Amazon was unavailable in Quebec. It is here in BC. Not that I've sold anything yet. Haha. Congratulations on finding a steady job. Steady work is the most important, so do not worry about the amount of time you spend here if you are getting more elsewhere. The most important thin gis quality anyway, not quantity. There is no point in writing a bunch of so-so articles. I myself have still not gotten a new job.

Maybe in 2012 I'll do it. Thanks for stopping by!

Yeh. You should give it a go dude. Hubpages brings less traffic than having your own website.

Princess, when I have some time I'll check it out again to see if anything has changed since the last time I tried.

Definitely writing a hub that might help other hubbers is a good idea, I'll check it out once you've posted it.

I am definitely considering writing an update. Whether that is going to be a monthly one, I don't know. In the last 5 months I have learnt a lot from a publisher's point of view. There are things you would not have thought of while writing in ghostwriting capacity. I want to get around to penning down all the lessons learnt and put them in a hub that will be helpful to new hubbers and fellow hubbers.

Are you sure that the amazon affiliate program is not available to you? Have you tried signing up as a non US resident at Amazon.com rather than Amazon.ca?

HSB, thanks, I certainly do enjoy writing.

Princess, indeed, I need to devote more time to writing if I am to make any money at it, no doubt about that. As for Amazon, I live in Canada and the Amazon program is not available to me. Would you consider writing a monthly update hub also?

      Congratulations on your new job!

Generating significant revenue from writing online requires devoting significant time to it, like any other full time job.

I went through some of your best hubs and noticed that you have not been using Amazon. Any reason? Amazon can be a nice little side kick to boost your earnings untill you have more hubs under your belt. Considering the level of your current earnings, only the commission from a sale or two could match your entire month's earnings from HP Earnings Programs and Adsense combined. Once you find time and publish more hubs, HP Earnings program will be a consistent source of revenue. All you need is some time, writing effort and commitment.

It was great to read about the genuine progress of a fellow hubber. Keep us all updated and I look forward to reading your next monthly update. All the best for your new job!

I've been debating about a philplasma.?? website that I could link to from multiple places as you suggest. But what's the point? What have I to offer at Philplasma.?? other than inanity? What kind of ad revenue would I get from adsense for that? Adsense says there is low competition for this category, but still about half a million searches for this per month. Maybe I'll give it a go...

      Thanks for the vote.

There are too many people on Hubpages in proportion to it's page rank. Hubpages has too little authority right now at PR 6. You can get more traffic if you build a website with links to it from several blogs. You will also pocket 100% of the adsense earnings too. Voted up for honesty.

Nice hub and its very sincere. I myself just joined hubpages 3 months ago, and I'm sure everyone else has been there, the difference is I am on Hubpages and many other web locations full time, I made hub a major part of my business at home which is a virtual office.

So Hubpages has become sort of like a digital note pad or diary of sorts for me, but I do take writing on hub very seriously, especially since real people are here to view what others have to put out on hub worldwide.

I found it one day at random just searching around the web while researching for tools & next thing you know my every day writing on other blogging platform simply ended, and I began writing on hub instead. I figured if things work out here at least it was worth the time invested, you know. Let's hope the crowd can help us all succeed here, in due time. Voted Up!

I don't really have a clue as to how to improve it, and as to what the average CTR is currently, I haven't the mental acuity to answer. Perhaps I'll see about including that in my next monthly update.

Dragon Naturally speaking, I'll have to check it out. Of course, I'm not a dragon, so I don't know how I could speak naturally like one.

Thanks, Brett and Alpha, for stopping by.

      Hi Phil,

I've also kind been out of the game a bit, as work got manic. However, I have just invested in a solution to speeding up the online world, have you heard of Dragon Naturally Speaking? You can dictate your hubs/writing and it will convert it to text (either live or recorded). It is very fast too! Glad to hear things are going well for you, you are still keeping the hubscore high, mine has CRASHED! lol ... guess I need to comment/write more.

I agree, those perks of freelance can be really good. It can take a long time, however, for a freelancer to build up a repertoire of clientele before becoming lucrative. With my living expenses as they are I couldn't afford to go freelance.

I think part of the advantages of a free lance job is that you can work strongly when you can and take breaks when you want. Congrats on your new job - hope it enjoyable and lucrative.

Phil, Congratulations on your job! I know its tough out there. I haven't written in a while. Everytime I try, life gets in the way. But also am going to try to set time aside, as I do enjoy it. By the way I also do like your fish picture. It is your icon now!

RF - Thanks for the advice.

Arun - I hope so too.

Alpha - Indeed, I'm more about the love of writing than the earning, but I'd love it if the earning got better.

Go - I'm pleased to hear I help you out, I hope I have helped others also. Thanks for stopping by!

Thanks for the update...glad you found a new job....I have to give you credit for helping me come up with my 100th hub....I thought about some of your hubs...so I used that approach on my 100th using your review hubs as the blueprint. Look forward to future hubs and future reviews in the future.

Hang in there-- I really thought you had been her much longer. I appreciate the comments you have sent my way.

All that you have done so far, will add to your experience and success. Keep in touch, keep writing and don't worry too much about the technical things just yet. Your little green-tailed fish is very distinctive and recognizable, I wouldn't throw it back.

      Best....

I would like to write for money, but most of the things I am interesting in writing about do not have such marketability as to have strong keywords. Who uses bing?

Hey Phil, if your writing to make money then you might want to consider doing keyword research before you write your article. Make sure that your title's keyword is rather easy to get to the top of bing and yahoo. I wrote a hub and its in 2nd position of bing and getting some okay traffic. So far within 24 hours I have around 60 hits. Its all about search engine keyword research and onsite and off site seo.
