Secrets on how to get followers on the hub pages

Updated on March 19, 2017

Followers...............................they will come

My good old Possum hub has finally gone to the wayside here at the Hub Pages & I have no hard feelings about it whatsoever $6, and actually I'm very relieved. It was really getting to be too much work to maintain. I'm not going anywhere right now, and it's time for a new chapter to begin for me here on the hub pages. I been here on the hub pages for almost two years now, and I've seen a lot here through different sets of eyes. So I've decided to tell you all what I've learned about following other hubbers here on the hub pages. It's very rewarding to have others following you, and it's also more complicated then a lot of people realize. It's disappointing for many to follow someone, and to find out latter that they aren't following you back. Something that everyone needs to remember is that the hub pages is worldwide, and you are dealing with all sorts of folks from every corner of this big round spinning rock that we all are living on. Most of the folks here on the hub pages are really good people, but you are always going to have knuckleheads where ever you go in this world. Just don't pay them any attention here on the hub pages or anywhere else for that matter. It's now time to get into the nuts and bolts of following.

The rules of following

1) Don't ever take your followers for granted, and they can stop following you as fast as they started to follower you. There are multiple reasons a person will stop following you. They may have lost interest in what you are writing about. They may have been banned by the hub pages for some reason. They may just be trying to reduce the number of people they are following. Be prepared for attrition here on the hub pages, where you'll constantly find old followers leaving and new followers arriving frequently. Just don't take it personally when another person stops following you, and remember you always have the choice to stop following them as well. You also can't blame another hubber who stops following you, especially if you aren't following them to begin with.

2) If you want more followers then you need to follow other people. You will see and receive much more traffic to your hubs just by simply following others, and leaving comments & fan mail.

3) Be polite and follow others in return who are kind enough to follow you. Some people feel it's just plain rude when someone doesn't follow them back. I've even read in the forums where a person who had a tremendous amount of followers was bragging that they only followed twelve people back. I'm not going to name names here, but that's pathetic behavior.

4) If you follow to many people, then your profile score will most likely suffer. This usually occurs when a person follows over a thousand other hubbers. This is where you need to ask yourself an important question. Are you here for fun, or are you here for a few nickles, pennies & dimes? I have a job & I'm here purely for fun, and to enjoy the company of other wonderful people here on the hub pages. To many that profile score is obsolete, outdated, and needs to be done away with by the hub page staff. Most of us don't even pay any attention to it & could care less, but this is a choice that each person needs to make.

Choosing those who you wish to follow

Now don't get me wrong, and this hub isn't about just following anybody. Everyone is different, and there are those who I'd follow even if they stopped following me, and then there are those who I wouldn't follow even if they paid me cold hard cash. Everyone is different even here on the hub pages, and you have to take following case by case, and base your decision as you see fit.

Of coarse it goes without saying that it's a no brainier to go ahead and follow those hubbers who's writings interest you. As of writing this hub there were well over 227,500 published users (hubbers) on the hub pages. However that number is highly inflated for multiple reasons. There are various types of hubbers & issues to consider when it comes to following. Here's a simple break down of each category. .

1) Temporary hubbers - These are the folks that joined the hub pages & wrote a few hubs, then left never to return again.

2) Inactive hubbers - These are seasoned folks that over time have gotten upset either at the hub pages or with their own results. They leave, sometimes deleting all of their hubs never to be heard from again.

3) Part time hubbers - These hubbers come & go from the hub pages. They return every now and then usually separated by multiple months. They leave a couple of comments, return a few follows and are gone again. They will probably follow you back, but it could take some time.

4) Retired hubbers - these people are permanently done with the hub pages, and are possibly even deceased.

5) The unresponsive hubber - These folks for whatever reason rarely or even sometimes never follow anyone in return. You will discover this by simply looking over their history, and you will discover that it's full of comments, questions, and forum responses. They seldom follow anyone, and when someone is kind enough to follow them, it often goes unanswered. There are those out there that might not want to hear this, but it's the bitter truth.

6) Hot hubbers - These are extremely active people who have a recent history of following others. Now if you want some guaranteed followers, these are the hubbers you will want to follow. To find them, you just simply click on a hubber's history, and on just the first page or two you'll discover if they are following others or not. If they have been following someone in the past day or so, or even better within the past 24 hours, then they are very active followers & you'll want to consider following them. Usually where you find one hot follower, there will be others around as well.

Tips on history

You will find your own history, and every single other hubber's history located on the lower section of the profile page. This is a virtual treasure trove of facts. This history dates back for the past eight weeks or two months for everyone who's on the hub pages. So there's no hiding anything from anybody on the hub pages, and the history shows everything. I've always found it interesting to see all of the unapproved comments, and items removed by a moderator, which I stumble across. That being said, I want to pass on a time saving short-cut which I've discovered over the coarse of time since I've been here. When you are searching through a history for hubbers to follow, anywhere you have already traveled to changes the shade of color on your computer monitor for "YOUR" computer. Now I realize that all computers aren't the same, but on my computer the words are a brighter shade of blue for places that I haven't traveled to yet. After I've clicked on them the color changes to a darker purple looking shade of color. Another words if you are looking for fast people to follow, then there's no reason to click again on somewhere you've already been. Simply scroll on down through the history looking for hubbers names in the brighter shade of blue, and click on those. This will save you a great amount of time when you are in search of new followers. You can take all of this information that you are armed with now, and get yourself some followers. After all I didn't get over 1,000 followers, because the Possum was a popular subject matter!

      Hi, possum lover,

I live (relevant term) in northwest rural Marion County, Alabama--Hamilton, to be exact and I must take my hat off to you for your exquisite writing and style. Bravo to you, my new friend.

THE hub that I read (above) is THE truth all in one hub about how to get and keep followers. I am proud and thankful for every follower that I have.

Honestly, with my health being affected by this Fibromyalgia, I cannot hold out to write each follower on an individual basis, but I have on occasion, went to the Community Forum to leave a note of thanks to them for sticking by me for now going on six years this June.

I am now following you due to the fact that you are who you are: REAL.

      I love it.

      Your Friend in Dixie,

I learned some new tidbits about HubPages. Thanks so much for taking the time to write this article. I would loft to see more "teaching" articles about the tips and tricks of how HubPages works in the background. I never knew that a little fact about looking in the history or even where to locate it.

Interesting. 1000 followers is no mean feat! Congratulations

I usually follow back; it depends on the initial follower's intent, for example there are sometimes those who are just plying for trade.

I always reply to comments; I think it's rude not to and I've unfollowed for that reason though there are exceptions.

      Thanks for following me.

Great hub, I thought the idea of following someone was because you were interested in the subjects they are writing about. I didn't realise you had to follow someone just because they are interested in your writing. It's good to know. I have little time to read others Hubbers articles at the moment, although I would really love to; I just about manage to sit down and read one a day. Three home learners and my freelancing, keep me on my toes!

I'm looking forward to following and gaining back support as soon I can.

      Thanks for sharing xx

I liked this hub and I agree with most of what your said especially about appreciating your followers. I fell into the group of part-time and no-time hubbers but I have determined to post new articles.

Life happens --BIG-TIME- --I have overcome, though.

I also appreciate all those who read my hubs. I am looking forward to reading more of your hubs.

Wow - I am impressed. You've got this right down to a friggin science my friend!! You may not have meant it to be funny but some of this I found quite hysterical and I so appreciate the candor.

I don't normally respond to questions only because I would rather spend my free time reading articles, poetry and most of all - humor. But this hubber posted a question while rather upset when someone who was being followed did not return the favor. I wrote pretty much the same thing you did. It's like anything - people enjoy certain spices and yours may just not be to their liking.

I follow because I love reading and enjoy creativity. But I only follow if I'm interested. So far, so good. They've kept my interest and I've kept following.

This was a breath of fresh air and I thank you for the honesty.

Take it easy - if you can't take it easy, take it any way you can get it my friend.

So that's what a possum looks like. I have this recollection of a storyteller your side of the 'pond' called 'Old Possum'. No relation? Right then, what about 'Uncle Remus'?

Anyway, congrats on the thousand! Some record you've gone in for for a bet, maybe? Well, my lad, we'll see what number this gets. Step back, here goes...

By the way, I like the 'nurse' just above the lusting animal. Right up my street - the only nurse I had any dealings with on a personal level was Irish, from Cork (I met her in San Antonio... Ibiza, not Texas). Nice, but she kept talking to her friend in Gaelic. I found that off-putting.

Your hub provides great information. I haven't been here too long so I am always looking for tips and advice.

I try to follow other hubbers that at least have something I am interested in reading. I always look forward to reading any of their newest work, too.

I often comment back so they know I have read it. Though, many times I read much more than I comment back on. Congratulations on all your followers!

      Voted useful and interesting!

AWESOME! I have been one of those who have wrote a couple hubs and haven't really been in the loop for a couple weeks. Honestly I've been spending a lot of time working on my WEBSITES, along with a crazy blogging schedule I've set up.

O.K. you now made me slide HubPages in the schedule. The only thing that I think has discouraged me about HubPages, is the posts I have on my websites cannot be used here. I've optimized the HECK out of them and they are all about my niche/s. I'm not much of a pump out articles kind of writer. And I refuse to SPIN any article.

What is weird, prior to disappearing I started on a article of my drinking (alcohol), and just stopped, I think it's at like 500 words right now.

Do you think it would be stupid to submit something like that alongside of my niche articles?

Just for the record, I would follow you even if you stopped following me! I love how you straight talk.

Hi possumlover, It is nice to see you, as I don't see you around much.

I tend to be timid in the process as I want people that will actually read the articles that I publish. When I see people that follow blindly without being selective in any way, I have to question motives. I get concerned about having too many as it is difficult to keep up with the amount of articles that they publish.

I always have to work hard to to take the initiative and follow, but I want to make sure that it is because their work and subject matter is such that I am going to read.

I take my followers seriously, because that is the way I want them to see me and my work. Thanks for an article that gets to the core of why we are hubbers. Cred2

I'm not too concerned about the number of followers but the quality of the followers. Good writing will attract enough followers to keep the normal person busy.
