Top 5 Beauty Hubs
There sure are a lot of beauty articles here, huh? These five are A+.
#1: How to Fix Orange Hair by Maffew James
Anyone who's tried to lighten brown hair knows that the struggle to get rid of the orange is oh-so-real. Brown hair lightens in stages: from light brown, to red, to orange, to yellow, to white. Except sometimes it really likes to just stop right in the middle of that burnt-sienna orange. Nice in crayons, not so nice on your head.
Maffew James gives you three ways to fix it, complete with detailed instructions. And the comment section is suburb.
In Maffew's words:
"Hair dye mistakes aren't the end of the world, and you'll probably make a few more in your lifetime. There is always a way to fix any coloring mistake, and orange hair is no exception."
Solid advice. God knows I've cried enough tears over accidental-orange hair to last a lifetime, and I'm not even twenty-five yet.
#2 How to be a Rockabilly or Psychobilly Girl by kittythedreamer
This isn't my personal style, but when I'm reading this hub, I don't care. I've always loved fashion subcultures--I wear my Former Emo Kid badge with pride--and kittythedreamer describes the music and history behind Rockabilly style in a way that's engaging, inviting, and informative.
The hub includes plenty of hair and fashion tips, with video tutorials for extra instruction, but it also has background on the music and culture behind the style, which I love. It's a genuine-sounding article from a genuine fan of the rockabilly subculture. It's full of information whether you're already involved in Rockabilly fashion, considering adding new elements to your style or new songs to your Spotify lists, or if you just want to look at some seriously pretty pictures. Because seriously, the pictures in this hub. Beautiful.
#3 How to Apply Lipstick Like a Pro by Jayne Lancer
If you've read my Lip Tar hub, you'll know I'm a huge fan of lipstick. And if you've read my 90 Second Makeup hub, you'll know I'm also a huge fan of leaving things to the last minute and then slamming makeup on my face and running out the door. I've got my lazy-lipstick game down pat, but I need to start taking Jayne Lancer's advice ASAP. This hub makes my nemesis, lip liner, seem so much less scary, and I love that she legitimizes the ol' "just put moisturizer on your lips," trick, because I've been doing that since I had motor skills.
Regarding lip liner:
Your lip liner should be the exact same color as your lipstick. It's always difficult to find colors like peach, apricot and coral, but you can use an eyebrow pencil in a light, warm brown instead.
Eyebrow pencil! Eyebrow pencil for lip liner! Makes so much sense, and yet I never would have thought of it.
#4 Hair Curling Tips and Techniques- Tricks You Wish Your Mom Had Taught You by wordscribe43
My mom has never been a beauty person; to this day, I'm the only person in my family who wears makeup. When I was a kid and my mom would put my hair in a ponytail, it was a ten minute process of her smoothing down the sides, twisting the rubber band, and then realizing I had a big hump on my head. Take it out, try again, try again...no wonder she never taught me any of these curling tips!
Some of the tricks in this article I'd still never heard of: what's the Panty Hose Trick? Isn't Cinnabon a food? But thanks to wordscribe43's fantastic hub, with detailed tutorials and tons of videos, I can forgive my mom for finally just giving up and chopping off my hair way-back-when.
When Does Make-Up Expire? by Jaynce Lancer
Another Jayne Lancer! But seriously, this is crucial. I've been known to creepily hoard my makeup, and I know I'm not the only one. But the truth is, using old products isn't just ineffective; it can also be really unhealthy. Creepy stuff can grow in there. Better safe than sorry.
My favorite part of this article is the chart at the bottom that summarizes the expiration dates for all the different products discussed (and she discusses a lot.) Save the chart to your computer, print it out and tape it to your mirror, tattoo it on your arm...do whatever you want, besides use old mascara.
