Well, I think you have to have your adsense account approved and your code listed on the affiliate settings, but you can also earn money using Amazon, eBay and Kontera on here.
However, if you don't have an adsense account, those ads still show up. I guess the hubpages people get the revenue then. Try again if you got denied. It took me more than once to get approved. If you get denied, reply to the message you get and talk to them. They reviewed mine and went ahead and approved it, but it took awhile.
Amazon was the easiest.
Its not mandatory that you have an account with google adsense. If you want to receive any type of payment you may want to sign up.

I have applied three times for an adsense account. I have done 5 hubs, and provided all info requested, but keep getting denied.
