Am I underestimating the power of the tag..
Does adding numerous detailed tags with your hubs help increase traffic? I've noticed that some of my hubs have low hits, and they also have two or three very vague tags to go along with them. Should I start adding new and improved tags?
Tagging is important because it helps search engines to classify your hub. You should add your keywords and phrases there as well as related words and phrases that describe your article. If there are other articles with the same tags then your article will be mentioned on those tag pages as well (just click on any tag to see what I mean). That is a good thing because that means more pages on the internet are linking to your hub.
Adding too much tags can harm your article as that can be seen as tag spamming but I don't know the exact limits - it also depends on how long your article is. Longer articles are allowed to have more tags.

I just looked at my polio hub, which has "infectious disease", "polio" and "world health" as tags. Related Hubs displayed include two that are related. One might be related, if you're a sick chicken. Another one is a recent history of Myanmar. The others are computer...

I have recently seen some posts indicating that a person can get in real trouble with HP for excessive/irrelevant tags. Even when the only tags you used were the ones suggested by the suggestion tool. In as much as most search engines ignore them anyway, why take the risk? So I have declared this...
