The way I understand it, when you write Hubs on a related topic, you can place them in a group centered on that topic. Ideally, most of your Hubs go into groups, at least mine do! Then if you write one Hub on another topic and can't place it in a group of your Hubs, it becomes an orphan. I have always considered it a good idea to try and provide at least one companion Hub for any Hub I've written that is standing alone. I hope this answers your question.

I have attempted to add a hub group just for that reason. However, I couldn't delete orphan hub and replace it with a related hub group I created. If anyone knows what may of happened and how I can fix it, suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

As far as I understand first of all you are to group your hubs in broader categories and then by dragging the orphan hubs or wrongly grouped hubs, the same can be assigned or put under proper groups. Grouping can be edited at : http://hubpages.com/my/hubs/groups

They are hubs that you haven't placed in a group. For example, if you write a hub on a subject you have never tackled before, it may end up being an orphan hub. That's my understanding at least. You may want to ask a hubpages administrator for a definitive definition.
