Dave, Welcome to HubPages!
At the top of your profile page, in the black bar click on "Explore;" then on the drop-down, click on "Articles."
At the top of that page, you will see "All Topics." Choose one that you know about. Perhaps you can read some of the articles published under that title to give you an idea of other writers' work (that's up to you).
Again, welcome aboard and Happy Hubbing!
Personally I'd choose a topic, or a small range of topics you feel you have something to share about. Then I'd have a look through the 'explore' section as Dora described and see what other people are talking about within those chosen topics. You will find that pretty soon you will have a few good ideas to start writing about.

Having spent 18months on hp with some success I'm starting to see the logic in diversifying to other sitesWhere do others recommend? I've had a look at squidoo and find the sports content to be far weaker than hubpages. Any other suggestions for where to write sports and health+ fitness content?

I write how-to and recipe hubs. I know the recipe hubs will make money eventually but I have read that technical hubs get more views. What is your thoughts or experience on this topic?

How do I get over 1,000 views across all of my articles? I know you told me many times to write, and write until I get up to 50 or 70 articles. How exactly do I know what to write or what to research? How do I expect to find a topic that google is desperately looking for?

Writing has always been my way of talking when no-one is listening so finding HubPages is as good as picking up the phone and knowing there is someone on the other end of the line.My problem is that I have so much to write about I don't know what my niche is or if I even want one. What do you think...
