I decided to include pictures in articles which had been featured without altering the text of those articles. Most of those articles have been rejected and I am wondering if anyone has also had this experience. I have not made changes to the text so I am wondering why they have been rejected.

Every single time I make a change to a Hub it gets unpublished or unfeatured.
That's why I quit updating them.
I don't have time to second guess HP anymore.

Things do change, which is why you happen to be writing on this site and not one those many failed. Your articles may have been approved the first time but they no longer fit the requirements for what an article should be.
You can post a few examples and others can look at it, give you some criticism, and then you can improve all of your articles and not have this happen anymore. If you edit more often, and improve your articles so that they cover material more thoroughly, you will have a better chance of getting search engine traffic.
Or, you can take a negative attitude like some posters suggest and not bother changing anything. You will never get much traffic, nor benefit from the improvements, but at least you can claim that it is all HPs fault.

I see people post about this a lot, but I've never had it happen to me. That makes me wonder how common this problem is. Do most people find that their articles get unfeatured after editing?

Most people? That is really hard to say. Probably the only people that post on the forums are unhappy about it and want a solution. The others just take their balls home and go play elsewhere.
It has happened to me. The article was written in 2012, and, as you know, things have changed a lot since then. The article that was unfeatured used to be okay, but I posted on the forum and a lot of people gave me help fixing it. (Especially theraggededge, who was nice enough to go over the whole thing line by line.)

I do not think this is a bad thing. We all need to learn how to improve, and since things change with an internet-fast speed around here (!), we all need to learn how to change.

Standards were a lot lower several years ago. What was acceptable then Sherry, isn't now. So yes, many articles do get unfeatured and I've had it happen to me also.

I still have several hubs that probably wouldn't meet today's standards eg. they contain more than one Amazon capsule, are too short and lack sufficient images. However, they met the guidelines of the day. The goalposts have now moved.

I think it's important for individuals to understand that times have changed. There is decent money to be earned on this site, but you have to be prepared to work for it. The days of earning an easy buck on the internet have long since gone. Given all the forum requests for QAP feedback, it should come as no surprise to writers if or when articles require revision.

A long answer to basically say, yes, I think it is a common occurrence and only to be expected if articles are below par.

I have experienced many of the changes, since I have been here for 6 years. I only have 52 articles, and I always try to keep everything up to the current standards. I have never felt inhibited about editing my hubs, but I can see why people would if they've had articles be unfeatured after a minor edit.

My hubs do not unfeature when I edit them.  There must be some factor that means some people are checked before they go live and others are not,
