Mysterious poem...

    I hope someone can shed light on this mystery for me.  My mother, for some odd reason, had a line from a poem (or story) that she would quote on occasion.

    I just Googled it, and nothing relevant comes up.

    Here it is:

    "His intimate friends called him candle ends; his enemies, toasted cheese."

    I have no clue as to the source, and Google only came up with results pertaining to actual cheese; recipes, identification handbooks on cheese, etc...it mattered not whether I included it in quotes or not, or with or without reference to it being from a poem.

    It's one of those things that just makes you crazy until its solved!  I do hope someone here can keep me from voluntary admission to the looney bin!  wink

    Thank you both so much!  I kind of had Lewis Carroll in the back of my mind, but since I was unable to recall the title, such a search wouldn't have done me much good!

    Now I'll be able to sleep tonight!  wink
