The layout now appears to be square on the home page of sites and about 2 to 1 in each category. Should we bother altering on text images to suit both formats?
Seems like it will be like this for a while, yes. But I wouldn't suggest changing everything right away.
For future images or images you are editing, I do suggest adding text/media in the center as much as possible. For example, in the 1400 x 1400 square that we usually use (the Instagram model on Canva), the middle 608 pixels are the sweet spot to add text/media. This should work with both layouts.
Ok, will do. Is the cropping process automatic or do editors do this? Also is cropping done from the centre, so to make square from rectangular, the two sides or top and bottom are cut off or alternatively to make 2:1 rectangular, the top and bottom are cut off (again the centre strip being used).
Do you mean when it displays on the main/category page? That's automatic. Your image will appear as intended in your actual article. Here is a test image I made to demonstrate how it translates. I will write a little guide with measurements and whatnot sometime soon.
Well both actually. So on a site home page, if the starting image is rectangular, let's say wide with a 3:1 aspect ratio, are the left and right bits lopped off but the height is kept the same to make it square and if it's a tall image, the top and bottom are cut off but the width is kept the same? Your category thumbnail suggests this is what happens.
If it is just a tall image, the top and bottom are lopped off, yes. 3:1 would also be converted into a square on the main page as it was before (so it would get cut off), but it would probably fit on the category page. I think making a square and keeping the media/text in mind is the best bet. I really hope that everything is converted to square, which is why I am hesitant to tell anyone to change anything. But I haven't gotten word as to when/if this is happening. I'm really sorry that I don't have more information available.
Ok, not to worry. Actually it doesn't look terribly odd if images lose some of their text when they appear as thumbnails. It's as if we're just seeing snippets/samples of what to expect in an article. The main thing is that in an article itself, all on-image text is displayed.
Yes, of course. Nothing has changed on the actual article's page. Thank you for checking in about this.

Will the aspect ratio of the thumbnails on the home page be constant? Previously various shaped images were displayed up to a maximum aspect ratio. Now images are cropped, so we may need to resize the to avoid losing text in an image.

When I use my own photos and graphics I usually size them to 3x4 landscape dimensions. I think this looks best at the top of the Hub, and when centered.Unfortunately, for the thumbnails here on HP it doesn't look so good. The sides are always cropped off. On Facebook they get all kinds of messed...

In my opinion, one of the fastest ways of making a site look tacky and really poor quality is to include oversized images which are way bigger than they are in reality so they look pixelated rather than sharp. In addition, huge images do not always read well on mobile devices.I know HubPages wants...

Thumbnail images for articles are square after clicking into a category on Turbofuture, but on the homepage of the site they're rectangular. This makes it tricky to get text positioned right so it isn't cropped, and the only safe place to put it is bang in the centre. This messes up any...

Where do you find your photos you use as thumbnails for your hubs?Especially because it says not to use other's photos unless you have license to do so I just don't want to get into any trouble...

I think it looks good, but personally I'd start with the "Views from Olvera" section as your first paragraph instead of the current one. Follow it with the image of you on the moonlit night. Those two things establish your credentials to write about the place, and gives the...
