Erratic daily views

   Anybody know why this could be happening? I have an article that's been on here for three or four years and generates around 70-80 views per day. I haven't updated it in all that time.
   
   Out of the blue a couple of weeks ago I was stunned to see that the previous day it had 600 views. Thinking though that was some kind of error I ignored it but then for the next three days it was getting between 300-400 views per day. Then it sank back to its usual 80 per day over the last week.
   However, just taking a look today and yesterday it had a staggering 1140 views.
   
   Of course, I'm not complaining about this as it's obviously resulted in higher daily income, but if there's an answer to these erratic daily moves I'd like to know so I could feed that answer into other articles of mine.

      Jerry, please post the link to the article. We can better access the fluctuation if we know the content.

   You haven't given us enough relevant information to form a judgement.
   
   1. Go into the stats and see where the views are coming from. Is it Google.com or an obscure website?
   2. Is there some event happening that might have a bearing on why the views are going wild? For example I have an article on Freddie Mercury that went crazy when the movie was released.
   3. Sometimes the views become erratic when there's a change made by Google to the search algorithm, it can happen just before, during, or right after the changes.

   As Paul says, we do not have enough info. A likely scenario is that you've been shared on some social media platform. What you've seen is a typical pattern of traffic spikes. But it could be something else, so more info is useful. Either way, congrats!

   Thanks for the comments. Quite right, I should have posted a link. There's nothing particularly special about this article and it's in a very popular niche as far as Google goes. All traffic has come from Google.

      Nice. It most likely is a ranking boost unless one of the cars made the news recently.

   It may just be a popular article that has organically risen then. The way the rankings are, the views to rankings follow an exponential pattern, so you maybe just jumped a few places in the rankings and reaped the increased views.
   
   Or it may be that you made some edits and Google has boosted the article to see how people react to it. Only time will tell. Generally speaking, my experiences is that when something suddenly rises, it falls again. Most gains come from a gradual rise in the rankings, but that's not always the case.
   
   I know almost nothing about the subject matter, but the article appears to be pretty solid.

      Thanks Paul. Yes I can testify that It went from 80 to 600 for a few days then dropped like a rock back to 80. There lies the mystery. Two weeks later it's doing it all over again. But maybe there's a keyword there somewhere that now and again finds a niche position.

   This happens to me quite often. I put most of it down to referral spam. Often the traffic comes from the city of Ashburn as indicated by GA. Bounce rate for views is 100% and the average time on page is 0.

      Yes, much of the time it's not real traffic and it peaks then goes down as quickly as it went up. Even when something gets shared a lot and gives you thousands of views, it's normally short-lived. Typically, it takes a gradual climb in the rankings to provide stable success. that's my experience anyway.
