I ask these questions because on PetHelpful there is a category for Dog Names, but not one for Cat Names. So I am curious about:
Does having a specific category for a topic help it with SEO?
If so, how many articles are necessary to create a new category on a niche site?
Are developers too busy to take the time to create new categories or is this an easy fix?
Thanks in advanced for any info.
Looks like there is a "Name" category for both. Does your hamburger menu look different?
Absolutely. I have nothing like these choices from the menu.
Dog names is buried under selecting a dog. I find nowhere for cat names under anything. These abbreviated "hamburger menus" are not what comes up from the Hubpages Author's view.
Thanks for looking into it.
So when you're on the main page, you don't see this? A hamburger menu is one that opens on the left-hand side when you click on an icon similar to the one in the screenshot (three horizontal lines).
When I create a new hub, I browse the categories available to Cats and Cat Breeds, "Names" is not an option for me to select, unless it is buried in a tree like "cat litter" that I would not think to look in. Try creating an article about cats, and see where the "name" category shows up. I can't find it.
It may exist as a category on Pethelpful, but I don't think it is on the HubPages platform where we create.
That doesn't matter because when your article goes through curation, we assign it to one of the categories you see on the homepage or in the hamburger menu. That initial choice the author makes is just to help guide the article to the correct editor.
Thanks again - I appreciate your messing with the forums ... so much to avoid.
It's my job! But I appreciate that.
As I was only 99.9% sure, I verified with someone who really knows what they're doing. The categories are harmless in terms of SEO on PetHelpful.
If I can hijack this thread, can "miscellaneous" be added to categories in the side menu? Miscellaneous articles can only be discovered by organic search or by reference but not by navigating a site.
To my original question, does it make any difference for SEO to have an assigned category for Cat names, rather than just a search for any title containing the words: cat and names

It would be useful to be able to sort our hubs into categories on the profile page. This would make it easier for readers to see what else is available in subjects that interest them, and also remind writers to work on a niche. I think the option was available on the old profile page - was it...

Hello all, so when I write articles on missing persons I would think it should be in the crime section if anything as almost all missing person cases are crime related (kidnapping, murder ext). But when it suggests a category for me I have never ever seen anything specifically for missing persons....
