I'm out shopping the other day and I overheard someone say "The only difference between progressivism and marxism is that marxism has a peasant revolt".
I thought this over for a while and tried to put it into perspective. I guess a good way to explain it would be comparing these terms in the classic 'Square vs. Rectangle' manner. That is, Marxism is certainly a Progressive ideal, but Progressive ideals are not necessarily Marxist in nature.
What they have in common is an interest in the greater good of the common citizen, you know, as opposed to conservatism which is sociopathic in nature. In NeoCon both these terms are used interchangeably with socialism, fascism, and nazism, which means that anyone with these labels think with their real brains as opposed to their lizard brains. Progressives are dedicated to moving society into a better place, while conservatives are dedicated to regression to the medieval state; thus, an antonym to progressivism is conservatism. Just my opinion, but thanks for the presentation of a real issue.
Utopia is awesome. Anyone who doesn't believe in it completely is a Nazi lizard!
Should the Progessives ask Society if it wants to move first?
Or do you think society lacks the intelligence to know they need to move?
And who pays the tab for moving?
Are under-achievers "less fortunate" than over-achievers?
Do "achievers" have what they have because they were "fortunate" enough to get life's "lucky" breaks or because they sacrificed and worked for it?
can I have half your paycheck so I can afford to be a progressive too?

Because it is so controversial throughout American history it might be useful to discuss what makes a TRUE conservative.
