I'm thinking of deleting an article that once drew in 1500 views per day, 2 months after publishing and republishing to see what happens. It only gets about 80 views per day. Nobody seems to link to it. The only issue is that students and others have stolen chunks of it and uploaded to Course hero and Chegg, but I can't see exactly what they taken because a subscription is needed to access those sites.
Since it was stolen, I recommend NOT deleting it. You will lose your rights to it. As long as you leave it published, it’s proof that you are the original creator.
After reading Eric´s post about updating I picked a few poor performers and did extensive updates on them. They were moved to Pethelpful´s front page and had a little traffic as a result from that but Google did not notice/care about the extensive updates and they did not move at all per page rank.
So, based on this experience, I think you are correct and am also going to delete a few of my poor performers and republish them to see the results. I think that is the only way they can move up on search.
As far as copys go, I am not sure what the answer is. Almost all of my articles have been copied over the years but will all have to be rewritten before publishing. I do not think it is possible to just copy and paste on a new page.
]If HP still gives a duplicate warning I will have to try and use the wayback machine as Beth Eaglescliff suggests.
DrMark, it’s not just an issue with a duplicate warning from HubPages. The more important issue to trying to get other hosts to remove the stolen copies when you file a DMCA takedown request.
Your request will be refused if your version was published after the plagiarizing copy. The wayback machine might be a way to defend your case, but it’s an extra step that most hosts won’t bother with.
You could check that a copy has been saved by the Wayback Machine website before deleting. (web.archive.org). Then if there's any query about ownership at a later date, you can send HubPages the link as proof that you were the original author.

Some of us have mentioned deleting low-performing articles from your Hubs. I sense they do it because it increases views/impressions. How does that increase views/impressions?
