I got a message from Hubpages telling me that it's eight years since an account of mine was migrated over from Squidoo.

HubPages was always my main writing site. I thought Squidoo was more than a little weird with all its cartoon monsters etc. for a long time.

I did eventually get into Squidoo though and came to enjoy it. Of course, almost as soon as I started doing really well there, things began to go awry.

Squidoo failed to introduce some of the more stringent measures that HP did to prevent getting punished by Google for quality issues.

They tried desperately to play catch up but it was all in vain.

It was a bit weird, looking back. It's where I learned the craft of online writing and made a lot of friends. I also had a how-to article that earned me $2,500 over its lifetime, not to mention a load of Amazon dollars. Those were the (lucrative) days big_smile

It was interesting that most of the writers at Squidoo were female. An even bigger proportion than even the Pinterest membership, perhaps.

Also interesting that everyone's articles got migrated over here after Squidoo crashed and burned. I still don't know if that was a wise idea, given that Squidoo was getting hammered by Google.

It makes one wonder what would happen with our articles if HP ever died...

If HP ever died, I don't know where I would move my articles.  No other platform pays as well as and as consistently as HP.

          Yes. That's my experience also.

Medium's probably the biggest rival nowadays. But HP and Medium are very different beasts.

HP-styled articles almost never do well at Medium and vice versa. There wouldn't be a great deal of advantage to migrating between the two, if one died.

            You’re absolutely correct, Paul.

As an example, I have articles from over ten years ago that continue to do extremely well on HubPages. But on Medium, it’s rare to continue receiving decent revenue from older articles.

I’ve been losing motivation with Medium lately, although its purpose is different.

Yes, Medium definitely requires a different style of writing. It took me a while but just had one article make $540 in a couple of weeks. More of that, please big_smile

Overall traffic to Medium.com has fallen by more than 70% over the past 20 months, according to SEM Rush.

I think it also has deep problems with plagiarism. Plus some of the "expert advice" on things such as health is extremely unreliable, there are people there pretending to have advanced qualifications and all sorts of fakery.

I hope that the new CEO can turn things around. So far, he seems to have done lots of smaller, practical things, but I've not seen any big plans.

I had my worst month ever at Medium in August, this current one looks like it might be my best, but the general outlook doesn't look great to me. Right now, it feels like a site that's lost its way.

I tend to separate the personal experience and what's happening with the site overall, as they don't always conform.

With Squidoo, for instance, I was still doing fine there right up until the day they closed down.
