You don't get rights to your work, they pay so little per 1,000 views, they don't pay you for adsense clicks.
Why in the world would anyone write there? yes, they do upfront payment, but it's miniscule.
Can anyone who writes for them tell me why? Am I missing something?
I must admit, I wrote a couple dozen articles for them when I started out. I guess I want to know that I didn't waste my time, just in case.
I'm pretty sure you can maintain the rights to your work if you only accept performance payments (based on pageviews). They only buy the rights when they are paying upfront.
Why would anyone use Associated Content? Pretty simple. To get backlinks to their own websites, which is how most authors make money. It rates a PR6 on Google, which isn't too bad. Hubpages also rates a PR6. So, if your own site has a Pagerank lower than PR6, you will get positive "link juice" by placing a link to your own website somewhere in the article or bio. The more sites that you have linking into you, the higher your own Pagerank will eventually become.
I seriously doubt that many people are making a windfall on writing for Associated Content (or Hubpages, for that matter). It can be useful in an overall plan for getting links back to your own website though, which is where the real money is.
Last night, I got a mail from AC, which essentially meant that all writers based OUT of USA are not welcome anymore. Due to some new tax requirements in USA, AC will now need to withhold a part of payments to its contributors. According to AC, this will make it uneconomical for them to handle writers who get performance payments ONLY.
Only featured authors will now get to continue on AC - which means a payment threshold of USD 100 against USD 1.50 for performance payments.
The change will come into effect from 1 May, 2010.
Non-US writers on AC, therefore, have two choices-
1) Get accepted as a featured author
2) Pull out your content - it will be useless for you anyway.
Another reason for not continuing on AC.
I was also trying to figured out the same like you. After reviewing many revenue sharing sites my best pick is the hubpages,
Even if the links were followed, PageRank flows from the page that links to you, so unless you have a link from the index page you don’t have a PR6 link.

Hi! I'm excited to be here!I'll be honest I currently have a deep, dark foggy cloud surrounding me........... as I learned today that Yahoo Voices is closing. I am devastated and honestly in a complete shock. I have over 1000 articles published on there.I will start writing my NEW content...

Read more...AC recently made a change to the payment system to writers outside of the US, ie: not paying us anymore. And $100 million? That would mean that HubPages is worth a billion dollars.

Does anyone know how to delete an account from Helium, Associated content and others like them?

I just signed up to yahoo contributors and found myself directed to associated content. They claim to pay upfront for articles. Anyone know whether it is worthwhile. I know sunforged, a very astute hubber wasn't impressed a while back before yahoo takeover.

Interesting read. They're coming down hard on pages with repeated spammy wording, hacked sites and pages with copied content. The most interesting thing was now that they believe they've cleaned up individual pages pretty well, they're turning their attention to "content farms," which I...
