Ok, this is weird. ... and a bit complex...please bear with me.

I just sent out an e-mail to everyone to whom I normally send a notice about a new Hub.

None of them ever leave a comment on my hubs, and instead, send me a follow-up e-mail with whatever comment they wanted to make.  If I understand correctly, your hub score is helped by visitors who leave comments.
Now, I'm in no way trying to "stuff the ballot box" as it were...I merely tell my friends and point them here when I write new content.  The majority of them, I never hear from one way or another.  I don't even know if they read the article.

I have maybe 4 people out of a total list of 20+ who I know read my stuff, and make comments.  2 of those are also Hubbers, so they don't count for 'outside/organic' traffic.

The remaining 2 send me an e-mail.

Now, I have noticed, by means of checking myself, without being signed in, that you do NOT have to be a Hub Pages member/author to leave a comment.  There IS a 'guest' comment form.

Soo... today, I get an e-mail back from my cousin stating that he "tried to leave a comment," but when he filled out the comment, and the "whatsits" anti-spam-bot characters and hit 'enter,'  everything disappeared, and it still said, "no comments."

I wrote back and assured him that I was certain I HAD gotten the comment, and it just needed to be approved to become visible.  However, when I signed in, there were, indeed NO comments "awaiting moderation."

What gives?  System glitch?  System delay?  I doubt it is a matter of him having mis-typed the anti-spam characters, or it would have delivered a message to him saying as much...and that is not what happened.

Can anyone shed light?  (This is a first!)

I would say you would have to visit the Hub in question to approve or see the comment. It happens to me sometimes too.

If you haven't setup the comment box by checking the first two boxes, then anyone can instantly leave a comment, without your approval. If you didn't receive the comment or email regarding the comment, then you have to go to the hub itself to get it and/or see it.

I hope I explained that right. hmm

Hmmm...welll. that would involve another round of e-mail, as he didn't mention which hub it was... bah.

Another friend left a guest comment on one of my  hubs today, with no issues...

More research is needed, it seems...

On a related issue... I just went looking for comments in the "my account" page, and filtered for "denied.'  There, I found several comments that had previously been approved & visible, suddenly showing up as 'denied.' NOT something I did!!  WTF???!!!

Is it possible that they were from hubbers that have been banned or simply just left, closing out their accounts?  That's the only thing I could think of...

Hmmm... I don't know, on the deleted comments, you mean?  I just re-approved them all.

Yes, that was what I meant.

As far as the other problem, I was on another site today and went to leave a comment, but got the captcha wrong.  It simply went back to the comment screen, which was now empty without any word about what happened.  I don't know how the HP one works, though.

Oh, interesting.  I've had problems with those fool things, myself, and usually what happens is it says something like "did not match" and presents a new one.

              Odd...gah..ain't technology grand??!  neutral
