Diwali is one of the most popular festivals in India. When Lord Rama conquered the Lanka after defeating Ravana, He came back to His hometown, Ayodhya and the people of Ayodhya and the King celebrated the victory by illuminating 'diyas' (candles). That's how this festival started and has been celebrated all over the India every year.

It's new to me about Rama, what I've heard in South India is different story:

Lord Krishna defeated a monster called Naragasura and it was his wish/desire to people celebrate the day as a Festival of lights (He was killed on same day) smile
