What happens when you are awarded Lens of the Day

Updated on November 15, 2014

Fame, riches, super hero status?

My "Hey Monkey Brain" lens Short lenses are best featured as Squidoo's Lens of the Day (LotD) in Feb 2011!

This was my second lens to be featured on Lens of the Day and I want to share here what you can expect when your lens is featured along with some tips that could help you to get your lenses features as LotD.

Yes you do get a lot of extra traffic. Yes, you do get lots of comments. Yes, you might earn more from your lens. Yes, you do get points. And a trophy. And yes, you might have a proud happy feeling for a few days or more.

Here are some of my numbers. Your mileage may vary.

Short lenses are best

LotD 21 Feb 2011

Deliberately short and creative, my Hey Monkey Brain lens got a few visitors in the weeks after I initially created it on 21 October 2010. Small bursts of traffic to the lens would appear when I posted on the SquidU forums.

Then, totally unexpected on 21 Feb 2011, I started seeing lots of people commenting. Some comments included "Congrats on LOTD".

WOW!

What do you get

when your lens is featured as Lens of the Day?

You will get a post about your lens on squidooHQ

The LotD on squidooHQ will have a post featuring your lens and this will start the flow of traffic.

Squidoo's Community Organizer, Kimberly Dawn Wells usually writes the LotD post and encourages readers to visit like this:

You will get visitors

Lots of traffic

Visitors will start streaming to your lens.

Four months with daily visits in single figures and often no visits to over 400 in a single day.

You will get visits spread over a few days

The Lens of the Day is featured in several places:

- On the Lens of the Day on squidooHQ (which people can subscribe to by email or RSS)

- On the Dashboard

- On the Lens of the Day Facebook Page

With people learning about the Lens of the Day from these different sources and being in different timezones, your lens will get visits spread over several days.

You will get an increase in Lensrank

Your Lens of the Day lens will rise in Lensrank with the increased traffic and activity.

Lensrank

#66 in Squidoo Community, #4,156 overall

Highest rank achieved: #4,156 overall

Squidoo earnings come from various sources depending on how you have monetized your lens, but the Ad pool earnings are linked to Lensrank so featuring as Lens of the Day can increase your earnings.

You get a Trophy!

When you are awarded your first Lens of the Day (or when the Squidoo monsters first appeared after your LotD) you get a shiny happy monster trophy.

You will get "Likes"!

With all of the new traffic to your Lens of the Day, you will get "Likes". Many of your visitors will click on the Thumbs Up icon.

You will get lots of comments

115+ comments

My Short lenses are best lens got at least 115 extra comments while it was featured as Lens of the Day.

Very few comments will be spam because your visitors are usually non-spamming lensmasters.

You will get points

Monster points. Interaction with your lens means points. Especially if you have a Duel, Guestbook or Quiz module on your lens. Points for every time someone likes your LotD lens, bonus points from high-level squids. Angel blessings too.

You will get some traffic to your other lenses

Curious Lens of the Day visitors will click through to your lensmaster page and your other lenses. Any lenses you have featured could get click-throughs.

How to write a LotD worthy lens

I say LOTD is something every lensmaster should work towards - the key is to provide value, which you clearly did. Well done!
