I am a certified teacher and have been tutoring young children for almost 40 years.

Happy Kids:

Kids learn more and better if they are happy in school.
Kids learn more and better if they are happy in school.

The Letter Xx:

Finally, this is the last letter of the alphabet that I am going to discuss. This letter is letter Xx. Unlike all the other letters that I have taught as beginning letters; I always include the final letter x, since X in most words are in the end.

Here are examples of words with Xx:

  • Initial x:
  • xylophone
  • x-ray
  • xylem
  • Xerox
  • Final Xx:
  • box
  • wax
  • mix
  • fix
  • fox
  • tux
  • six
  • fax
  • ax
  • sax
  • hex
  • max
  • ox

Again, review lesson is very important. This review lesson will cover all the past letters of the alphabet that you have taken. So far, you have covered all the letters and x is the last letter that you will teach the children.

More Activities for Teaching Letter Xx:

X is the last letter that you are going to teach the children so it is advisable to assess how far the children have learned. If you have given time for the kids to recite the letters every day, there is no problem at all regarding the children’s ability to identify the different letters of the alphabet. If the children know the letters and the sounds, they are almost ready to read words.

But don’t be in a hurry. The first thing to do is make sure that the children have really learned their past lessons before proceeding to teach the new lesson.

One of the best activities that you can introduce for letter X is to let the children write the final X.

Here’s a sample worksheet for letter Xx:

Identifying pictures:

You can use some pictures to teach letter X to the children. Since you are teaching the final X, you must emphasize how you pronounce each word so that the children will recognize the final X.

Show the picture to the kids and ask them what the picture is. Let them repeat the word and feel the X at the end of each word.

This activity is very important since your aim is to let the children recognize the final sound. The more words with final X you give the better. But since there are very few possible objects with final x that you can show to the children, you can use names that end in x such as:

  • Max
  • Mex
  • Lex
  • Dex
  • Nix
  • Lux
  • Sax
  • Dax
  • Bax

Game Time

Let’s play a game with the kids this time. Here’s what you do:

  1. Get a big box.
  2. Put some objects in the box that begin with other letters and mix the objects that begin and end in x.
  3. Let the children (one at a time) go and find the objects that have final X and bring it to the table.
  4. Every time a child brings an object with initial and final x, praise him or her.
  5. When all the initial and final x objects are on the table, ask the children to name the objects for further letter X enhancement.

Syllables:

Syllable teaching for letter x is different since you are teaching words that end in x. So it is the other way around. Instead of xa xe xi xo xu; it would be ax ex ix ox ux.

This would be hard for the children to absorb since it is their first time to have this kind of lesson. Give them time to understand the lesson and let them read more if possible.

Here’s a sample worksheet for the x ending.
