HMS Resolution
1940
Dakar - The British Battleship HMS Resolution is hit by Vichy French coastal guns and severly damaged. Having had both of their battleships damaged in two days the British commanders and De Gaulle realise that further assaults would be too costly. They withdraw to Freetown the capital of the British colony of Sierra Leone.
North Africa - British aircraft raid the port of Tobruk whilst naval forces bombard Sidi Barrani.
Gibraltar - Vichy French aircraft attack Gibraltar in retaliation for the attack on Dakar.
1941
Eastern Front - The Germans stage a dawn attack on the Crimea.
1942
Eastern Front - The Russian counter-attack in the north-west of Stalingrad continues to make progress.
New Guinea - The Australians commence a counteroffensive on the Kokoda trail with an attack on Ioribawa
Madagascar - The British gain control of the centre of the island.
1943
Eastern Front - Stalin announces the capture of Smolensk as the troops of the Russian West Front occupy Smolensk and Roslavl. The Germans had fortified Smolensk during their occupation and had claimed it was impregnable. The German 4th Army withdraws to the west of the city and withstands heavy Russian attacks towrds the river Orsha. The Russians reach the Dniepr in the Southern sectorand occupy the East bank from Kremenchug to Dneproptrovsk.
New Guinea - The 20th Brigade continues its slow advance on Finschhafen
