Dakar - Aircraft from the British carrier Ark Royal attempt to bomb the coastal batteries at Dakar and the Vichy French Battleship Richeliieu. British Battleship HMS Barham is hit by two shells from the coastal batteries but not seriously damaged.
Mediteranean - Operation Halberd. A large convoy sails from Gibraltar headed for Malta. Admiral Sommerville commands a powerful naval escort including the Battleships Nelson, Rodney and Prince of Wales, five cruisers, 18 destroyers and the aircraft carrier Ark Royal.
Fifteen Governments adhere to the Atlantic Charter which was drawn up by Churchill and Roosevelt at their Newfoundland conference held at sea from August 9-12. They are Australia, Belgium, Canada, Czechoslovakia, France, Great Britain, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, South Africa, USSR and Yugoslavia.
Guadalcanal - The Americans attack Mount Austen and in the area around Matanikau - Kokumbona
Germany - General Halder is dismissed from his position as Wehrmacht Chief of Staff. Halder had previously disagreed with Hitler about the conduct of the war on the Eastern Front. Kurt Zeitzler is appointed in his place but with responsibilities limited to the Eastern Front only.
Eastern Front - The Germans are forced to withdraw from Smolensk and Roslavl in heavy fighting.
Solomon Islands - The first allied aircraft land on Vella Lavella airfield.
New Guinea - Japanese aircraft attack allied ships supplying the Finschafen bridgehead. The Australian 20th Brigade Breaks through Japanese defences on the River Bumi.
