I think it's a combination of laziness and a lack of curiosity. I work with computers and have to frequently help the elderly access something on the web. There are plenty that open with "I don't know anything about computers" which translates to "Do this for me." And then there are others who come in and figure it out on their own, or retain the information I give them. It's all about having the drive to learn new things and to not fear failure. Which is arguably a bigger fear. People don't like to fail, so they often opt not to try at all. I'm guilty of it when it comes to home improvements I should be doing.
