How many of you have rebounded beyond expectations, even becoming a WINNER after a significant job
job failure including a fall from grace, demotions, involuntary transfers, or firings?
Me. I was laid off from an editorial position at the world's largest crafts retailer. Actually, I think they wanted to fire me to bring the budget in on target, without having to pay severance, but every reason they gave in my exit interview to terminate me with cause, I refuted easily. In very short order, the Texas Workforce Commission's arbitrator backed me up. By the time the unemployment I was awarded kicked in, I didn't need it.
The day I was walked out of the building (Friday), I sent out an email to all my industry contacts, letting them know I was available. On Monday, I got a call from a local publishing company, to come meet with the owner, who was someone I'd chatted with over the years. We met, I showed her a few things I was working on, and we agreed that I should write a book for her. So, at the end of my first week, I had a book contract.
30 days later, I delivered all the artwork for the book, and I was hired full time, at a higher position than I'd left, with a matching salary. A few months later, we went to a trade show with a large program I'd designed, and it sold like hotcakes. I got a nice, fat raise.
2 years later, having written several books, paid off all my bills, and socked away six months of living expenses, I quit, and started my own company. That was almost 11 years ago. I've been doing my own thing, and making a modest living at it, ever since.
The weird thing: if I hadn't lost the cushy corporate job, I never would have quit. It was secure, and offered great benefits, and a cost of living raise every year. I really would have missed out!
