How could a particle with a "size" "wait" prior to the big bang if there's no "space or time"?

Scientists say a tiny particle blew up into the universe and created time and space and gravity etc. Firstly how could it be "tiny" (ie have a size)if there was no space? Secondly how could it have been "waiting" to blow up if there was no time?

In documentaries eminent scientists are quoted saying there was no time or space prior to the big bang. That the idea of "size" was irrelevant or meaningless in such a state. The big bang then released time and space etc at an unimaginable speed.
