Why will an earthquake of this magnitude occur in one of the poorest nations on earth?
The earthquake would have occurred even if Haiti was one of the richest nations on earth. Was that a serious question? Are you wondering about the motives of some imaginary "god"? If you, or others, are wondering that -- GROW UP!
For a somewhat related Hub about the problems that overpopulation causes, see:

Disasters of this magnitude are inevitable part of the natural cycle. They can strike anywhere, in rich or poor nations. We can't prevent them, but we can do something by preparing for their unwanted coming.
Infrastructures must be built with proper specification for them to weather even the harshest earthquake or any disaster for that matter. Old buildings that have outlived their use and have become threat to the occupants must be leveled down and renewed. There are a lot more we can do to prevent destruction of this gravity.
