We have a 5 month old german shepherd pup and the vet and trainer both agree she needs to be put...

to sleep due to behavioral issues and we are crushed, yet know she can snap out at nyone anytime. We have an eight year son who is terrified of her already? What shoudl we do?

5 Months isn't a long time to evaluate aggressive behavior. I would rather see the pup spend time with a professional trainer (who works with aggressive dogs), away from the family. That gives the dog have a 3rd chance.
Many GSDs test constantly for dominance and the worst of the lot (the most prey driven) can sometimes make excellent police dogs. Ck the yellow pages for a pro who works with problem dogs.
Hope all works out for you & your pup.

And how did this poor pup develop such behavioral issues?  Dogs are not born with behavioral issues, they learn them just as a human learns them.  The dog needs humans that understand and can work with her properly.  She now needs re-education and love. Do her a favor and put her up for adoption to someone without small children around.
