As far as I know, he turned towards the firing squad so that he will be shot in the front instead of in the back which was customary for firing squads at that time and place.
The reason that was widely given was that so he can face his death, die fighting and defiant to the end and die a Filipino patriot, rather than be shot in the back and die like a coward or a traitor.
