Wormholes are theoretical passages that connect vast distances and act like a short cut.
According to Sci-Fi stories, they can be used to travel from one galaxy to another in a fraction of the time it would take to cover these distances even at warp speed (faster than the speed of light) and that's usually no more than a couple of seconds.
Professor Steven Harking says that the particles that are thought to make wormholes possible are real enough but whether they could be controlled to give us the possibility of using them like they do in movies and so forth, is unlikely at this time.
