I live in Spain and the teacher asked the class of one of my children this question, is there a reasoinable answer ?

Male dogs have been known to urinate the same as females on occasion. Not sure, but I think that most start out that way as puppies in fact and it is only as they get older that they change their habits.

against the biggest mound of sand.

alternatively they may hold it in till they find something/someone more appropriate for urinating on

Any where the dog wants to pee.  Dogs do not need trees, fir hydrants or anything else to pee, they can (and do) pee any where they want to.
