Because he wrongly believed that they were an inferior subset of humanity, along with gays and the mentally disabled. I've heard also that he had a special hatred for Jewish people also because his grandfather may have been Jewish and he believed that Jewish arms dealers were responsible for Germany's loss of the first world war (they may have been selling to both sides.)

I disagree with Earl in that I think that Hitler didn't think the Ashkenazi, or Khazars to be inferior, he only used that idea as propaganda to get at least some of the people behind his extermination plan.

There are many more reasons why the holocaust happened.

Basically Hitler believed in the purity of the Aryan race and felt that Jews, Gypsies and some others were a corrupting influence in the emergence of the master race and the superman.  He also believe that much of Germany's problems were the making of the Jews so he and his cohorts hit upon the 'Final Solution' which was the extermination  of Jews in concentration camps.

I think the whole thing was complex, but a couple of factors were very important in what happened. One is simply centuries of ingrained anti-semitism, common to all of Europe, some places worse than others.  Another factor is that European Jewry were a convenient scapegoat for the Nazi regime.  Nothing works better to get a group of people together than to give them a common enemy or cause.  The Nazis were able to get people to unite against the Jews.  This was all part of their massive propagande machine.  Of course a huge motivating factor was the enormous financial gain achieved from the persecution of European Jewry.  The art works, gold, property, and other goods stolen is still the subject of debate today.  The Swiss banks still refuse to explain how they came into possession of much of it.  Precious art owned by certain parties can be traced back to Jewish pre-war families but is not yet returned.  Some countries (Lithuania) have stalled or outright refused to give back what was taken to the Jewish survivors during the war.  I think the power of money was absolutely key in the destruction of European Jewry.

The jewish population in Germany was a destruction to Hitler aims and goals.  One thing most rich people and businessmen and Government leaders in Pre-war Germany were Jews and these people for Hilter were not pure Germans.  The Jewish people had some involvement during First World War and Hitler hated their involvement to the defeat of Germany.  Thus all his hatred to Jews were sum out.
