The process whereby mankind continually updates their God concept to more and more abstract and esoteric beings to avoid being proven wrong as the knowledge base increases?
Mountains, trees, animals, etc. were all considered to be gods once, but we figured out they weren't, so super people were invented that caused lightning, thunder and other natural occurrences but they died, too when we found out better.
Now we have invisible, undetectable creatures with no physical connection to our universe and no observable actions. Harder to disprove.
