    The invention of the press. This produced the written word faster than before and spread ideas. It made books available to people who couldn't afford them and made it possible for people to learn new things. It's quite an amazing thing,

    The advent of agriculture 10,000 years ago. Without farming, we would still be nomadic. We would never have invented philosophy, higher education, literature, etc. Moreover, we could never have established permanent civilizations or invented anything too big or too heavy to carry.
