The American P-51 Or The British Spitfire, Which Had The Most Impact In WW2?

Between the American P-51 and the British Spitfire, which of these two fighter aircraft made the biggest difference in World War II?

The Spitfire was a superb aircraft but if the Luftwaffe, or rather Hitler, hadn't been duped by England's bombing of the Ruhr which was done to get the Germans to shift from military targets to terror bombing in retaliation, which they did; well, Germany would have probably won the Battle of Britain and cleared the way for a land invasion.

The P-51 on the other hand was a paradigm changer as the horrific bomber casualties suffered by the Americans in their day-light bombing strategy couldn't be sustained. The "little helpers" of course, were able to accompany the B-17s to their targets and back, and along with being an exceptional fighting and strafing machine, sewed up the air war for the allies and effectively defeated Germany's industrial capacity to supply it's machines, armies and people properly.  P-51 wins big but the Spitfire is a close and honorable second.

The Spitfire had the greater impact from 1939 to 1942. After that, the P-51 had the greater impact. That makes sense.

I'll go with the P-51 since it fly in both European and Pacific Theaters.  FYI...just watched "Redtails" for the second time tonight...great movie that involves the P-51!
