What are the advantages of hiring a lawyer for disability?
I have a herniated disc along with degenerative disc disease. I need back surgery and can't afford to be out of work for extended amount of time without pay.
If you take the time to check that you are hiring a good and experienced lawyer, with perhaps credentials, awards, memberships, and trustworthy testimonials to prove that he or she is a good and experienced lawyer, the main advantage is that you may discover that you have a valid case - that you may qualify for money compensation while you are unable to work. Perhaps the lawyer may be able to prove that your herniated disc is work-related, or if you've had an accident at the fault of another, perhaps it is not too late to claim for personal injury damages (there are time limits that apply when filing a personal injury claim.) Perhaps your work contract will be examined by the lawyer too, and he may detect that your employer is not allowed to not pay you while you are away from work. If none of these things apply, and you are just wanting to claim disabilty benefits, a lawyer may still be able to help you, or at least point you in the right direction. Many lawyers offer a free first consultation, and it won't do you any harm to speak to a few before you make the decision to hire one. Take your medical records with you to that free consultation.
