    I think they get the name from the old myth than they crawl into people's ears and burrow into the brain. Not true!!  They are beneficial natural decomposers in the garden, although they often feed on young seedlings and some blossoms- like roses.

    From the fact that its wings, when unfolded, are shaped somewhat like an ear.

    The earwig is a kind of small centipede. Formerly believed to penetrate into the head through the ear, but since discounted. Of the species Forficula auricularia. The females pinchers are a little straighter while the males pinchers are a little more curved.
