I believe it came to life in Europe. First came the Black Death, then came another disease that I have forgotten the name of. Both were horrible and caused mass death. The symptoms were open sores, aches and pains, limbs dropping off, yet the people were still alive for a few days to even a week. This is the time that dancing skeletons appeared in art.
